PFCC Conference Draws Spectrum of Health Care Providers
More than 200 people attended the Patient and Family Centered Conference June 3 at the Renaissance Hotel Long Beach. Presented by National Health Foundation and PFCC Partners, the conference explored the challenges, solutions and successes related to PFCC within a diverse health care network. Attendees represented a spectrum of hospital staff including CNOs, RNs, social workers, physical therapists and hospital administrators.
Along with two dynamic keynote speakers, four breakout tracks covered pediatrics, PFCC design, taking PFCC beyond hospital walls, and how to transform rounding. A panel of patient and family advisers also discussed advisory councils and opportunities for building structures that support integrating patients and families in health care in ways that improve quality, safety, experience and health care delivery.
E-patient Dave deBronkart, a cancer survivor and international TEDx speaker on health care, and Dr. Robert Wachter, professor and associate chairman of the department of medicine at UC San Francisco, each delivered stellar keynote addresses inspiring attendees to be pioneers in the patient- and family-centered care movement.
“Patients are the most underused resource in the health care team … patients are, in fact, the ultimate stakeholder,” e-patient Dave said.
An event highlight was the candid discussion from the panel of patient advisers. Anthony White, a patient adviser from Torrance Memorial, delivered tips to providers on how to start engaging patients successfully and effectively. And 17-year-old patient adviser Jack Stalker from Flagstaff, Ariz., inspired the crowd, emphasizing the value of the services patient advisers provide, including their role in policy development and other projects within the hospital.
