Security Drill Tool Kit Now Online
The Security and Safety Active Shooter Drill Tool Kit is now available online. The 2013 HASC Security and Safety Committee developed the tool kit to create greater awareness of workplace violence among hospitals and other health care facilities, and to provide the tools necessary for each facility to develop a local plan that leads to a safer, more prepared environment.
Based on an active shooter drill held at LAC + USC Medical Center in March, the free materials include templates, checklists, industry guidelines, scenarios, safety rules, participant releases and staffing suggestions for hospitals to plan a similar event. A video also provides a firsthand account of the HASC drill with scenes from the simulated attacks in clinical and office settings.
While most active shooter drills are geared toward first responders, the HASC drill uniquely focused on hospital staffers who are often in the direct line of fire caring for patients when these violent attacks occur. The training provided in the drill and accompanying educational seminars helped participants assess their level of preparedness for this type of emergency event.
The materials are available to the public at www.hasc.org/active-shooter-drill-resources. Participants who attended the drill will receive USB drives with the materials in the mail.
HASC’s Security and Safety Committee would like to thank everyone who participated in the planning of the drill, and in the development of the Security and Safety Active Shooter Drill Tool Kit. You can read more about the lessons learned from the drill in Campus Safety Magazine.
