Area Leaders Join National Nurse Recognition
Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti this week joined HASC President/CEO George W. Greene and other leaders to say thank you and job well done to nurses battling COVID-19 across the region.
In a video posted here, Garcetti, Greene and six others send messages of support and praise to the region’s nurses. HASC and the mayor’s office produced the video in observance of National Nurses Week — which runs through May 12.
“Every single day, nurses treat patients, care for the sick, reassure the injured and the struggling, and they save lives,” Garcetti emphasized.
The work nurses do every day, especially during the ongoing pandemic, is “awe-inspiring and noble,” Greene underlined.
Nurses “are the backbone of our entire health care industry,” Greene added.
Six others share recognition in the segment. They include Cathy Chidester, L.A. County Emergency Medical Services Agency Director, Bob Huber, Ventura County District 4 Supervisor, Steve Carroll, Ventura County Emergency Medical Services Agency Administrator, Kathryn Barger, L.A. County District 5 Supervisor, Nick Clay, Santa Barbara County Emergency Medical Services Agency Director, and Kelly Long, Ventura County District 3 Supervisor.
Dating to 1954, National Nurses Week is observed annually to recognize the critical efforts nurses contribute in American hospitals and communities. Similar observances are held this week and next in Canada, the U.K. and internationally.
May 12 is the birthday of Florence Nightingale (1820-1910), who raised nursing’s profile during the Crimean War of the 1850s.
As part of a campaign supported by HASC and the California Hospital Association, Californians are encouraged to recognize the state’s nurses and health care workers for their tireless efforts during the ongoing pandemic. Add your message of support here.
Watch for additional HASC social media postings recognizing nurses through Tuesday. More than 150,000 nurses were employed in the HASC region in 2016, according to a Los Angeles Economic Development Corporation report.
Additionally, HASC’s Strategic Communications team invites area nurses and health care workers to share photos that underline their critical roles for possible inclusion in future HASC communications.
