Overview
Reduced mobility contributes to the 700,000 to 1 million falls and 2.5 million hospital-acquired pressure injuries annually. Hospitalized patients with low physical mobility are also 34 times more likely to die, and six times more likely to be institutionalized, compared with those who ambulate two or more times a day. Caregivers learn early in training the importance of mobilizing patients to reduce poor outcomes. If health care organizations have key elements in place, staff can successfully mobilize patients of any population, including complex patients (e.g., older adults) to help avoid serious and deadly complications.
