Call for Recuperative Care Volunteers
Project neighbors and NHF staff pose outside the 18th Street Los Angeles structure now being converted to a 62-bed facility for people experiencing health issues along with homelessness.
HASC charity partner National Health Foundation seeks volunteers for three Saturday work days in August that will assist building contractors with the group’s Pico-Union recuperative care project.
The facility, a partnership between the NHF and HomeAid Los Angeles, is rehabilitating a 100-year-old sanitarium. Construction is expected to be completed this autumn.
Work days run from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Aug. 4, 11 and 18 at 1032 W. 18th Street in Los Angeles. Attendees will paint, install windows, replace fences and more.
This project highlights the importance of recuperative care, which has been shown to be significantly more effective than extended hospital stays. Homeless patients use hospitals at a much higher rate than housed patients, with lengths of hospital stays twice the average.
Without a place to recover, many homeless clients end up back in the emergency room within 30 days.
