CLC Launches Leadership Training Series

June 26, 2019

CLC board member Dora Barilla (right) presented a portion of June 11’s community health event in Orange County. Additional sessions are offered in Ventura, Valencia and Montebello this August and October.

Close to 40 HASC hospital and system members and public health officials attended the inaugural launch of Communities Lifting Communities (CLC) in partnership with the Public Health Institute regional training, Alignment of Governance & Leadership in Healthcare: Building Momentum for Transformation, this month. The free half-day training was held twice — on June 7 at Kaiser Moreno Valley and June 11 at Mission Hospital Laguna Beach.

Both training dates were led by Dr. Kevin Barnett, a senior investigator with the Public Health Institute, who presented insightful strategies to build institutional capacity and alignment and provided innovative tools to enhance population health.

Dr. Dora Barilla, vice president of community health investment with Providence St. Joseph Health, presented an integrated approach to analysis and capacity building to transform health care. Barilla outlined how focusing on intentional investments and community strategies can improve community health outcomes.

Rick Rawson, president of Adventist Health and Rideout in Northern California, inspired participants on how to sustain a commitment to community and transformation by sharing his personal leadership experiences.

Attendees also received an organizational self-assessment to assess their organization’s progress in health care transformation, an action plan, a logic model and local/regional analysis of community benefit to take back to their hospitals.

Communities Lifting Communities will host three additional sessions this year:

  • Aug. 7 – Community Memorial Hospital, Ventura
  • Aug. 14 – Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital, Valencia
  • Oct. 30 – Beverly Hospital, Montebello
