Fuzz and stubble grew thicker this week as staff took on HASC President/CEO George W. Greene’s challenge to sport facial hair in support of the Movember men’s health campaign.
The Movember Foundation works to raise awareness of testicular and prostate cancers, mental health, suicide and men’s health in general. Starting with 30 Australians in 2003, the effort has since drawn more than 5.5 million participants around the globe.
Too many men end up in serious health situations due to skipping doctor’s visits and screenings, as well as simply not paying adequate attention to their health, Greene noted.
“Besides supporting a great cause, the beard contest will also hopefully provide some good laughs and can also be the start of recognizing other health awareness months by HASC team members,” Green said.
As of this week, HASC staffers had passed Greene’s initial fundraising goal of $1,000. However, the contest will continue through the end of the month.
Next week, before the Thanksgiving holiday, beards of the dozen or so participating staffers will be evaluated — with the top three earning gift certificates. An additional gift card will be presented at random to a “non-bearded” employee who donates to the cause.
Teams at CHA, Hospital Council and HASDIC are also participating. Please contact Isela Rivas, executive assistant to George Greene, with questions.
