On Nov. 14, chief nursing officers, directors, managers and analysts of clinical and auxiliary services gathered at Good Samaritan Hospital’s Moseley-Salvatori Conference Center to attend Developing, Measuring, and Documenting Employee Competence. Emelda Latham, RN, MS, a human resources management consultant, facilitated the HASC educational offering. Participants discussed topics key to recruitment, hiring and documenting competencies of employees in an allied health environment.
Discussion topics included:
- Who’s responsible for meeting The Joint Commission standards?
- Management’s role in competency tools and assessments
- Behavioral interviewing and the importance of buy-in from leadership
The day was filled with interactive discussions and peer-to-peer learning. Participants were encouraged to share tips and ideas with one another.
“It’s important to ensure that the candidate interview rating form evaluates what’s most important to satisfactorily perform the job,” Justin Sischo, Sr., an HR professional with Alta Hospitals System, advised other attendees.
Later, members divided into groups to discuss and build key job-specific documenting competencies to successfully meet The Joint Commission requirements and avoid common surveying pitfalls.
This workshop is a great opportunity for health care teams to explore their current systems of documentation and improve organizational processes. Registration for the 2018 course will be available next summer.
