NHF Recuperative Care Opening
NHF staff welcomed project neighbors to the Pico-Union recuperative care facility during the former sanitarium’s rehabilitation. HASC members are invited to the facility’s opening celebration on Friday, Oct. 12.
Join California Assemblymember Miguel Santiago and Los Angeles Councilmember Gil Cedillo, along with HomeAid Los Angeles and ETCO Homes, to celebrate the opening of National Health Foundation’s new 62-bed recuperative care center in L.A.’s Pico-Union neighborhood. The event begins at 2 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 12 — at 1032 West 18th St.
At a time when many Southern California residents are objecting to new homeless facilities, NHF’s Los Angeles recuperative care center is being embraced by its neighbors — many, in fact, were involved in its planning and building. In line with NHF’s mission to humanize and localize care for those without homes who are discharged from a hospital and need a place to continue healing, the Pico-Union site will feature semi-private rooms, family-style dining and a community garden. Neighborhood volunteers helped install windows, paint, assemble furniture and sew curtains.
The event starts at 2 p.m. with an official ribbon cutting followed by a block party until 7 p.m. The event will feature free food, music, Lotería (a card game similar to bingo), dancing, bounce houses, face painting, sack races, bubbles and balloons!
Street parking in the community is limited, so public transportation, carpooling or Lyft/Uber are strongly encouraged.
