Forty attendees participated in Sept. 14’s Nursing Span of Control – A C-Suite Discussion to explore this challenging issue. The morning consisted of a three-hour workshop with speakers diving deep into span of control (SOC) — the proportion of nurse employees to each nurse manager or supervisor. Attendees also shared success stories and brought their SOC challenges to the table for brainstorming and planning.
The program also presented strategies that senior hospital leaders can use to monitor nurse manager workload and help organizations move beyond reactive decision-making to a proactive mindset.
The impetus behind Sept. 14’s session is the soon-to-be released white paper, Span of Control: Clinical, Business Impacts and Solutions, developed by a subcommittee of HASC’s Nursing Advisory Council. The paper investigates and explores relevant academic research and offers solutions to help C-Suite managers make informed and effective decisions about SOC’s impact on staffing and efficiency.
The white paper will be released to the C-Suite on Oct. 2. For more information, please contact Teri Hollingsworth, HASC VP, Human Resources Services.
