October Care Equity Slots Are Open for Enrollment
A workshop offered by HASC and presented by Communities Lifting Communities and the Public Health Alliance of Southern California provides an overview of the role hospitals can play in advancing health equity across their organizations and in the communities they serve.
The all-day session takes place from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 8 via Zoom. Class size is limited to 30, so enroll today by clicking here to reserve your spot.
The workshop covers foundational concepts central to advancing health equity including an overview of the difference between equity and equality in a health care setting, the root causes of health inequities (both historical and contemporary) and the impact of implicit bias and racism on current health outcomes.
Participants will learn strategies to help hospitals work to transform their organizations into anchor institutions by adopting an anchor mission and aligning institutional resources — including hiring, purchasing and investments — with the needs of their communities. In addition, this course will cover relevant legislation related to implicit bias recently passed at the state level.
At the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Describe the difference between equity and equality in a health care setting.
- Understand how social determinants of health contribute to health inequities.
- Describe the root causes of health inequities and identify how historical and contemporary root causes continue to impact health outcomes today.
- Understand how implicit bias and racism, both interpersonal and structural, impact health outcomes.
- Identify strategies for addressing racism and bias on a personal and institutional level.
- Learn best practices for addressing health inequities and advancing health equity across organizations and systems.
- Recognize the vital role hospitals can play as anchor institutions and identify strategies to align institutional mission and resources to support the communities they serve.
