Paper Offers Insight Into Orthopedic
Surgery Supply, Demand, Recruiting
Why is demand for orthopedic surgeons increasing nationwide? A white paper recently released by physician recruiting firm Merritt Hawkins offers insight to the trend.
From 2000 to 2010, the number of hip replacements increased by almost 125 percent, growing to 310,800 cases for patients over 45 years of age. With 10,000 baby boomers turning 65 every day, the number of knee replacements is expected to increase 673 percent by 2030. The growth in baby boomers coupled with the specialization of more fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeons projects a significant deficit in available orthopedic surgeons by the year 2025. Today, there are approximately 17,350 orthopedic surgeons in patient care across the U.S. Currently 45 percent practice in a single specialty or within a private practice group.
In Merritt Hawkins new white paper, Orthopedic Surgery: Supply, Demand and Recruiting Trends, the firm’s experts evaluate compensation levels, other financial incentives, practice considerations, and proven strategies to recruit and attract orthopedic surgeons.
