President’s Message From George W. Greene
In recent months, we’ve been fortunate to experience plummeting COVID-19 cases and the easing of restrictions — both signaling that we’re on the path to pre-pandemic life. Much of this downward trend has been driven by science-based safety protocols and COVID-19 vaccinations.
Unfortunately this progress is threatened by the more transmissible Delta variant that has become the dominant coronavirus strain in California. This new variant is contributing to a rise in cases and hospitalizations, raising uncertainty over the trajectory of the pandemic.
The fact is, despite significant vaccination progress, many unvaccinated people remain susceptible – particularly in our communities of color. The disproportionate rates of cases and hospitalizations and the rising numbers underscore the need for continued efforts to encourage vaccination uptake among vulnerable segments of the population.
As the worrisome Delta variant gains momentum, HASC remains vigilant and continues to monitor its direction and its impact on our member hospitals. With the Independence Day holiday behind us, there is concern that we may see an increase in COVID-19 cases in the coming weeks. I encourage you to reach out directly with any concerns or developments that might inform our continued response.
Recognizing the potential for another spike in cases, HASC has convened local public health departments, health plans and partnering organizations to align our public messaging efforts. As we explore ways to be unified in our approach, there will be an opportunity to leverage the voice of our hospitals to further expand our reach and effectiveness.
While we cannot yet declare victory over COVID-19, we have an opportunity to learn from our experiences over the last 15 months. HASC is now launching its Pandemic Response and Emergency Preparation, or PREP, project. We’ve engaged Health Management Associates (HMA) to design the approach and methodology, which enables us to draw from a broad range of perspectives. Through this process, we aim to more fully understand the extraordinary challenges that emerged over the course of the pandemic; identify best practices; and develop meaningful and actionable recommendations that will guide cross-industry preparedness for future emergencies.
Over the coming weeks, you may receive an email requesting your participation in this important project. I appreciate all your valuable insights — which will be instrumental in positioning our region for the next large-scale public health crisis.
Take care, stay safe and stay tuned!
