After piloting Los Angeles’s first recuperative care program a decade ago, HASC partner National Health Foundation (NHF) will break ground on a new facility in the city’s Pico Union neighborhood April 18. In partnership with HomeAid Los Angeles and ETCO Homes, NHF will renovate a 100-year-old, currently-vacant sanitarium, transforming it into a healing, trauma-informed recuperative care program, and expanding its total service capacity from 52 to 100 beds. The new center is set to open this fall.

The public is invited to a groundbreaking ceremony from 10 a.m. to noon on Wednesday, April 18 at 1032 West 18th Street in Los Angeles. Lunch will be served. Guests can register online through Eventbrite here.

NHF currently operates three recuperative care sites: in Los Angeles (at the Reno Motel), San Gabriel Valley and Ventura.

This fall, NHF will transfer its San Gabriel program to the new Pico Union site. The Reno Motel may convert to a fully funded program through a contract with the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services. With the anticipated expansion, NHF’s team will double in size from roughly 30 to 60 employees.

The new facility will offer a library, public workspaces and activity spaces, as well as two dining areas, including a family-style eating area and communal outdoor spot. The property will also include a “store,” where individuals can select clothing, accessories and personal items at no charge.

“Everything in this facility is designed to reflect NHF’s values of empathy and meeting individuals wherever they are on their path to a home,” said Kelly Bruno, NHF’s President/CEO.

Last year, NHF’s recuperative care program served 950 individuals, housing 67 percent of them. With the program expansion, the organization anticipates serving close to 1,700 individuals experiencing homelessness.

“We’re eager to provide a higher quality of service that better aligns with our mission and values to more individuals than ever before,” Bruno added.
