Founded by HASC in 1973, National Health Foundation has played a role addressing regional health disparities for more than four decades. Over the past year however, HASC’s charitable partner has received renewed attention for its work building recuperative care facilities across the region.
Together, NHF’s four functioning centers are expected to serve close to 1,700 patients this year. The facilities offer significant savings over housing patients in hospital beds — saving taxpayers and providers significant sums annually. A hospital stay in California costs an average of $3,300 a day, compared to $250 for recuperative care.
Recently, NBC4 reporter John Cádiz Klemack presented a story spotlighting the positive aspects NHF staff have made in L.A.’s Pico-Union neighborhood — where the charity’s largest recuperative facility opened last year. The piece highlights the importance of community support to open the facility, and testimonials from current guests, who shared warm and inspiring experiences in the program.
The segment was featured on Life Connected, a series that highlights inspiring community stories throughout Southern California. If you missed the story, watch it here!
Similarly, USA Today featured a piece on National Health Foundation’s efforts to convert motels like the Reno Motel in Mid-City into a temporary housing unit as part of NHF’s Recuperative Care program. To read the full article, click here.
Ventura County Star also highlighted NHF’s recuperative care facility in Ventura to help address the lack of housing for homeless patients who have been discharged from hospitals. To read the full article, click here.
