A total of 32 people participated in September’s Board of Registered Nursing and Healthcare Professionals Intervention/Diversion Program overview session. The five-hour seminar took place in San Diego but was open to attendees from across the state.
The event gave hospital nursing executives critical information on the Board of Registered Nursing and Healthcare Professionals’ Intervention Program and Diversion Program. This program gives health care professionals a supervised pathway towards confronting drug, alcohol and other behavioral health issues before returning to the workplace.
Sept. 20’s seminar featured Virginia Matthews, project manager for MAXIMUS, the nursing board’s administrative vendor; and Gina Skinner and Stephanie Trumm, BRN intervention program analysts, who provided an overview of the scope and function of the diversion program. The seminar also addressed the stigma of drug addiction and provided an update on the current opioid crisis and controversies surrounding the diversion program, including data on program effectiveness.
