Student Loan Repayment: A White Paper
Are stipends a new tool to recruit residents to your organization?
According to a 2019 survey of final year residents by physician recruiting firm Merritt Hawkins, 42 percent of final year residents have over $201,000 in student loan debt. Today, 58 percent of U.S.-trained physicians have at least $158,000 in student loan debt compared to just 38 percent of international medical school graduates.
Merritt Hawkins, a leading physician search and consulting firm and HASC Endorsed Business Partner, produces a regular series of white papers on a wide range of physician recruiting and related topics. One of its latest is titled, Medical Education Loan Repayment and Resident Stipends: Emerging Trends in Physician Recruiting.
The white paper examines the growing number of health care facilities that are incorporating medical education loan repayment into their physician recruiting incentive packages, and how these repayments typically are structured. Merritt Hawkins’ latest Review of Physician & Advanced Practitioners Recruiting Incentives illustrates the average loan repayment offered for new doctors is $101,571 — while 78 percent of opportunities forgive this amount over a period of three years. In addition, the white paper looks at typical resident stipend amounts and terms.
