Transgender Training Supports Confident, Respectful, Patient Care
According to a study by The Williams Institute at UCLA, 1.4 million adults identify as transgender in the U.S. Of that number, 218,400 live in California. For health care providers it is critical to have staff educated on how to provide the highest-quality, appropriate care for all patients – including those who identify as transgender.
Skills that help employees to care for transgender patients are increasingly seen as mandatory. Some nurses work in specialized programs that help transgender people transition to new gender identities – while others provide care for diverse patients across a wide spectrum of medical care. Today, all hospital personnel need to understand the terminology and issues that support appropriate care for this group.
The California Hospital Association and HASC are leaders in the field – offering some of the first sessions on transgender issues presented by health care trade associations.
HASC’s Transgender Patient Care Certification Program provides a comprehensive introduction in a compact, three-hour course. The class is presented on Thursday, March 15 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Los Angeles.
Dr. Kristie Overstreet, a board certified transgender care therapist and clinical sexologist, will explain often misunderstood terms and make clear the difficulties and fears that the transgender, gender-nonconforming, gender-queer and inter-sex patient population has in seeking health care. Participants will also receive a Transgender Healthcare Dignity Certified Provider certificate upon completion.
At the end of this course participants will be able to:
- Define, describe and recognize basic concepts for identifying and understanding gender identity and gender dysphoria in patients.
- Illustrate the importance of being inclusive of gender identity with medical paperwork.
- Illustrate the importance of terminology and definitions to provide care for the transgender population.
- Differentiate the various stages of transition for transgender people.
- Identify the role health care providers play in care delivery for this patient group.
