Ventura Recuperative Care Debuts Beds for Homeless
National Health Foundation’s Pathway Recuperative Care facility opened its doors on July 10 in Ventura County, joining the organization’s two other Recuperative Care facilities in Los Angeles and La Puente — in the San Gabriel Valley.
The dozen-bed home fills a key gap, providing a refuge for homeless patients discharged from hospitals. Located at the county’s downtown Salvation Army, Pathway will make a big difference in the area for individuals experiencing homelessness, attendees said at a June 29 soft opening.
“You can do a lot with 12 beds, compared to what we’ve had before,” Oxnard City Housing Director Arturo Casillas said at the event.
National Health Foundation and community partners have been working to open the facility for three years. Its $700,000 annual operating expenses are being shared by five area hospital systems: Ventura County Medical Center, St. John’s Hospitals in Oxnard and Camarillo, Community Memorial Health System, Los Robles Hospital & Medical Center and Simi Valley Hospital.
Additional partners include HASC and Gold Coast Health Plan, which gave $38,000 to cover startup costs. Gold Coast is Ventura County’s Medi-Cal coverage administrator.
As at the other two facilities, Pathway Recuperative Care Ventura will allow patients without a home to recover in a safe, healing environment while providing critical support services, from providing transportation to follow-up appointments to helping each patient find a permanent home.
