June 10 Patient Safety First Collaborative Event Will Include Special Focus on the ER
The Southern California Patient Safety First Collaborative Event on June 10, Culture Trumps Strategy: Digging Deeper, features special content on Safe Prescribing Guidelines for Emergency Departments, as the Greater Los Angeles area seeks to prevent abuse and overdose involving prescribed pain medications.
The 9:30 to 10:20 a.m. special session, The Hospital’s Role in Safe Prescribing: Focus on the ER, will be led by Maureen McCollough MD, FACEP, Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine, UCLA School of Medicine. Participants are encouraged to bring their ER nurse or medical director to this session of the meeting.
The Los Angeles County Prescription Drug Abuse Medical Task Force has been meeting to establish in Los Angeles County emergency departments (EDs) Safe Pain Medicine Prescribing Guidelines. The task force is currently developing a toolkit that will assist EDs as they implement the use of the patient handout. The toolkit includes guidance concerning pain management, patient satisfaction, EMTALA, addiction treatment referrals, community clinic referrals, as well as other resources.
