More than 500 attendees, including 53 sponsors, made HASC’s 2016 Annual Meeting a stellar success.
The meeting took place April 13-15 at the Bacara resort in Santa Barbara County. Next year’s HASC Annual Meeting is also scheduled at Bacara, for April 5-7, 2017.
The 2016 theme, Uber-Bold: Moving Health Care Beyond Incremental Change, was summed up by industry innovator Glenn Steele in an opening address.
A longer-term outlook, Steele said, will ultimately reduce costs under the industry’s emerging reimbursement paradigm.
“If you take (population health) steps, you’re going to drive costs down, not because you’re withholding care, but because you’re providing better care for these chronic diseases,” he said.
Meeting breakout programs included proven models for bundled orthopedic payment, population health management, most appropriate care, telemedicine, searching for “upstream” causes, and retail clinic and hospital partnerships.

The Annual Meeting closed with a spirited talk by British adventurer Alastair Humphreys, whose world-spanning treks drew on an uber-bold impulse to leave daily routine behind.
To that end, he urged listeners to push through “the doorstep mile” of inertia — the first mile of any journey — which requires a burst of determination to overcome.
“It isn’t tigers and crevasses that stop me from succeeding,” he told listeners. “It’s worrying about not being successful.”
Others enjoyed shining moments at the event too. Some took place on the resort’s golf course and tennis courts. Others made successful connections at dinner and social events, forging new ties with colleagues and gathering fresh insights on important issues.
An honor role listing event winners follows. The photo album is displayed above on the website. (If you are viewing this as an email, please click on the headline above.)
HASC thanks everyone who attended, supported and enjoyed the 2016 Annual Meeting — and looks forward to seeing them again next April!
