Behavioral Health ED Volume Is Meeting Focus

Nearly 1 million psychiatric patients arrive in California EDs each year — at an average cost of $2,264 per day. The number of behavioral health patients creates stress for staff — with more than half of ED nurses experiencing physical or verbal abuse each week, according to one study. Speakers at June 13’s Hospital Operations Committee meeting will share strategies for managing behavioral health patients in EDs.
Jenny Delacruz, of Orange County Global Medical Center, and Jeff Corless, of KPC Health, will discuss crisis stabilization units for behavioral health patients. A discussion of psychiatric urgent care and subacute care follows.
HASC’s Jaime Garcia will brief attendees on SB 1152, state legislation that would establish discharge protocols for homeless patients. Gabe Waters of Utah-based Collective Medical is scheduled to present on the firm’s EDIE database that distributes information on frequent ED utilizers.
HASC’s Hospital Operations Committee provides a forum for facility leaders to discuss challenges facing hospitals and best-practice solutions. It also serves as a resource for HASC staff to learn what members need.
Committee participants include COOs, CMOs, VPs of operations and associate administrators from hospitals and integrated systems. To learn more about attending, contact Kimberly Johnson, HASC director of association services.
