On Wednesday, March 7, registered nurses representing four of the six HASC counties took part in the interactive scenarios and group exercises for the association’s Charge Nurse Development course. Participants gathered for a full-day of discussion and training on the role of the charge nurse, reviewing the many qualities and attributes of an effective nurse leader.
Mark Kaliher, RN, FlexEd, led the course, providing lively, funny and knowledgeable instruction. Kaliher encourages life-long learning and emphasizes the importance of big picture thinking, critical thinking skills, systems knowledge and having a team oriented focus when it comes to the leadership journey. With respect to this class, he adds, “What you want in a charge nurse is someone who can run around and put out fires.”
The Charge Nurse Development course is a part of HASC’s Charge Nurse Development Series, a three-part program designed for registered nurses in leadership roles. The series focuses on:
- Understanding the role of the charge nurse
- Creating a culture of safety
- Critical thinking
Courses will be held throughout the year in both Los Angeles and Chino. A second Charge Nurse Development course is being held today in Chino. Additional course dates for the charge nurse series are May 16 and Sept. 12 in Los Angeles and May 23 and Sept. 5 in Chino.
