Ramasamy Reflects on Barber Fellowship

Outgoing HASC James D. Barber Administrative Fellow Rathi Ramasamy says she will continue to focus on social determinants of health and health equity as her career unfolds.

Rathi Ramasamy wraps up her year as HASC’s first James D. Barber Administrative Fellow this week. An Ohio native, she earned a Master of Public Health degree at UCLA before embarking on her 13-month term — which she called “a springboard for career leadership” in the health care field.

Medicare Wage Improvement Index

August 1, 2018

HASC has once again partnered with Toyon Associates, Inc. to conduct the 2018 Medicare Wage Index Improvement Project (WIIP) for the Los Angeles area. Toyon estimates that the project has the potential to increase Medicare reimbursements by $18 million in Federal Fiscal Year 2020 by maintaining the Los Angeles Average Hourly Wage (AHW) above the rural California wage index (CA rural floor).

This week, HASC welcomes a new executive director and program manager to leadership roles in its Communities Lifting Communities initiative aimed at closing gaps in Southern California health care.

2018 Hospital Quality Institute
Conference Runs Oct. 28-30

Respect, Reliability, and Resilience is the theme of the 2018 Hospital Quality Institute Conference — at the end of October in Huntington Beach.  

Jim Bagian — an anesthesiologist, engineer and former NASA astronaut — will deliver a keynote on sustaining a culture of patient safety. Also scheduled are former NASA astronaut Yvonne Cagle, MD,  HASC President/CEO George W. Greene, and HQI VP Julia Slininger.

Associate Member Lunch Is Aug. 28

Associate members attended HASC’s Associate Member Luncheon in Sept. 2016. Associate membership gives participants access to select educational events, informational publications and other resources.

HASC’s 2018 Associate Member Luncheon is scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 28 from noon to 1:30 p.m. in the HASC board room in downtown Los Angeles. Open to all associate members, the event is a great way to learn about economic, legislative and regulatory trends likely to impact the industry.

Call for Recuperative Care Volunteers

August 1, 2018

Project neighbors and NHF staff pose outside the 18th Street Los Angeles structure now being converted to a 62-bed facility for people experiencing health issues along with homelessness.

HASC charity partner National Health Foundation seeks volunteers for three Saturday work days in August that will assist building contractors with the group’s Pico-Union recuperative care project.

HASC’s Telepsychiatry Partners

August 1, 2018

Following a vigorous vetting process, HASC has endorsed InSight Telepsychiatry and Vituity Telepsychiatry as endorsed partners.

Both firms offer patient consultations via two-way video conferencing. InSight’s and Vituity’s services also include evaluation and support to resolve psychiatric crises — including 5150 holds and releases. 

On Wednesday, Aug. 22, a free HASC webinar will outline InSight’s and Vituity’s service offerings. Set for noon, the session is titled Telepsychiatry Services: Resolving 5150 Holds.
