Los Angeles Community Hospital at Bellflower recently opened a 32-bed inpatient behavioral health unit—the first step towards restoring full operations to the facility.

Now owned by Prospect Medical Holdings, Inc., the facility replaces the former Bellflower Medical Center, which closed in 2013.

The revamped hospital features new nursing stations and a new patio for patients. The facility employs close to 60 clinical staff and about 20 non-clinical employees. It opened its doors on July 23.

2014 is shaping up to be a transformative year for California hospitals, with implementation of the Affordable Care Act, proposed ballot initiatives and impending legislation. Plan now to join fellow hospital leaders for an important advocacy program—CHA Health Policy Legislative Day, March 18 and 19 in Sacramento. Hospital leaders can meet with elected representatives to explain the role hospitals play within communities, and how their votes will impact access to care.

The CHPAC statewide goal for 2014 is to raise an ambitious $1,100,000. Our HASC goal has increased by more than $60,000 as a result. We need everyone’s support to make this happen. 2013 was a challenging year for fundraising – seeing record lows in hospital contributions throughout the HASC region. By reducing early elective deliveries and hospital-acquired infections, Patient Safety First (PSF)… a California Partnership for Health avoided 3,576 deaths and more than $63 million in otherwise unnecessary hospital costs between 2009 and 2012, the collaborative announced in its year-end report.

RSVP today for the Diabetes Fall Health Summit, a partnership presentation by Assemblymember Roger Hernandez, City of Hope, First 5 LA, Kaiser and the California Center for Public Health Advocacy.

Congratulations to the winners and nominees of the 6th Annual Hospital Hero Awards held November 11 at the Marriott Hotel - Downtown Los Angeles. Master of Ceremonies and ABC news reporter Rick Romero helped celebrate 42 nominees from hospitals in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino and Santa Barbara counties, all outstanding contributors to their facilities and communities.

The event will be held Friday, Nov. 11, at the Marriott Hotel, Downtown Los Angeles. The Hospital Hero Awards, produced by HASC, honors outstanding achievements and events that occur within hospitals throughout the HASC region. Proceeds from the event benefit the National Health Foundation (NHF).

In its first year, Patient Safety First…a California Partnership for Health, reports that it has helped save 800 lives by working to prevent sepsis-related deaths. Launched in 2010, Patient Safety First is a groundbreaking three-year, $6-million collaboration between the National Health Foundation, California’s Regional Hospital Associations, and Anthem Blue Cross to improve the consistency and quality of health care for Californians.

The 6th Annual Hospital Hero Awards will be held Friday, November 11, 2011, at the Marriott Hotel, Downtown Los Angeles.

A Conversation with OSHPD and the Hospital Association on Hospital Facility Projects is scheduled for Monday, July 25, 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the USC Davidson Conference Center in Los Angeles.
