A PathWays education event will introduce new health care
professionals to major issues affecting the field on Thursday,
Oct. 8 at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.
While this year’s contingent is set, professionals who are new to
health care are encouraged to apply for slots on next year’s

With qualified candidates in short supply for many specialties,
managing a hospital’s existing staff has never been more
critical. Using a computer software staff-management system is
one way to help ease the burden – while also providing tools to
find the new assets to strengthen a team.
The maker of one such system, ShiftWise, is an endorsed business
partner affiliated with HASC and its AllHealth business
subsidiary.
Data breaches continue to dog hospitals across the country, with
facilities in California, Indiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, North
Carolina and Ohio responding to incidents over the past month.
So far this year, at least 32 hacker-caused breaches have hit
health care providers, the U.S. Department of Health and Human
Services Office for Civil Rights reports. Close to 65 percent of
health care organizations surveyed reported some kind of
information security incident over the past two years, reported
the Pomenon Institute, an information-security think tank.
Health Care Executives of Southern California (HCE) is organizing
its next group for PathWays: Healthcare Policy in Action to begin
this September.
PathWays is a career-development program offered by HCE and HASC.
The program educates early-career professionals about key health
policy issues, including the 1115 Waiver, changes in Medicare
reimbursement and insurance expansion — and prepares them for the
changing health care industry.
A limited number of spaces remain for PathWays early-career
development sessions scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 24.
Developed collaboratively by Healthcare Executives of Southern
California (HCE) and HASC, the PathWays program educates
early-career health care professionals on key health policy
issues and prepares them for the rapidly-evolving health care
world. The program provides an opportunity for participants to
connect with senior industry leaders and academic experts through
a series of four comprehensive sessions.
The biggest cause of injuries to health care workers, according
to the U.S. Department of Labor, is repeated manual patient
handling activities, including heavy manual lifting associated
with transferring and repositioning patients.
Additionally, according to the paper A New Model for
Successful Safe Patient Handling Programs, presented at the
5th International Conference on Applied Human Factors and
Ergonomics in July 2014, hospitals are among the most dangerous
work environments in the United States, and hospitals are making
patients out of their workforce.

Most recently, Day worked at Valley Presbyterian Hospital (VPH)
as Manager of Physician Relations & Business Development, where
she was responsible for the operations of the Physician Services
Department and business development initiatives.
