As 2022 approaches, I hope this email finds you and your families safe and healthy. As we all know the Omicron variant is spreading rapidly and driving increased hospitalizations as we continue to experience acute workforce issues. Next week we will continue our calls with county public health officials, EMS agencies, behavioral health leads, and yes, unfortunately, coroners’ offices.
This year, over four million Americans with behavioral health conditions — psychiatric, substance-related, or both — will enter an emergency department that is not prepared to treat them. However, when EDs are empowered to properly evaluate and treat behavioral health patients, hospitals see enhanced efficiencies and improved quality of care for all ED patients.
The HASC-Health Career Connection (HCC) workforce diversity program is known as the College to Career Diversity Internship Program, or CDIP for short. CDIP is a 10-week, full-time, paid, project-based summer internship program that identifies and recruits local, diverse, high-performing college upperclassmen and recent graduates seeking health care careers.
The American Red Cross, and other organizations that distribute blood products, are again reporting critical shortages following another low-supply situation in June. This one, however, is worse and may constitute the worst blood supply shortage in a decade.

LOS ANGELES (Dec. 16, 2021) — Communities Lifting Communities (CLC), the Public Health Alliance of Southern California (Alliance), and the Hospital Association of Southern California (HASC), recently marked the end of its first, two-year cohort of Cherished Futures for Black Moms & Babies, a collaborative effort to reduce Black maternal and infant health inequities in Los Angeles County.
HASC members are invited to attend a virtual information session to learn more about the Ambulatory Care RN Specialty Apprenticeship, a new California registered nurse specialty apprenticeship program, set to launch in the first quarter of 2022. Known familiarly as Dr. CK, Regina Chinsio-Kwong holds a doctor of osteopathy (DO) degree from Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona. She currently serves as deputy health officer at OC Health Care Agency.
Southern California Edison’s new weather awareness page now gives hospitals and other business customers advanced warning about Public Safety Power Shutoff events.
Public Safety Power Shutoffs, or PSPS events, are designed to reduce risk of wildfire during high-wind and other fire-weather events. For the past several years, SCE has worked with HASC to keep hospitals up to date on the latest information associated with PSPS events.
HASC’s next session on labor union trends in the U.S. and California health care industries is now set for Thursday, March 31. State of the Unions: Organized Labor Review Webinar offers an overview of organized labor’s current activities and identifies opportunities to utilize important trends.

The DHEI (Diversity, Health Equity, and Inclusion): Transgender Healthcare Dignity and Certification Program educates health care providers on how to deliver the highest-quality care for the transgender, gender-nonconforming, genderqueer and intersex patient community. This unique half-day course covers the eight-unit Dignity Model developed by clinical psychologist Kristie Overstreet, PhD using an interactive lecture approach.
This week, many of us will gather around tables with our families and friends and take time to reflect on what we’re most thankful for. The year certainly has brought both familiar and unexpected challenges. Despite the continuance of COVID-19, our hospitals’ commitment to caring for all Southern California’s residents has not wavered — they have continued to safeguard our health and safety. For that, I am grateful and proud to work alongside their dedicated leaders.
Communities Lifting Communities, the HASC charitable affiliate and 501c3 nonprofit, this week shares some significant community outreach work completed by two member hospitals.
Over the past year, Cedars-Sinai and Adventist Health White Memorial have pioneered procedures to identify diverse business partners with an aim to promote job creation and economic activity in the communities they serve.
In 2020, widespread social distancing and masking pushed seasonal flu cases to record lows. However, 2021 could be a different story. With effective COVID-19 vaccines available, far fewer people are taking precautions against airborne infections. What’s more, we may all be highly susceptible to new flu strains due to lack of previous exposure.
The College to Career Diversity Internship Program (CDIP) mission is to build and empower a diverse future health care workforce by providing bright and motivated fourth-year undergraduate students and recent graduates with meaningful, 10-week, full-time paid internships at our member hospitals across the region. CDIP also provides HASC members the opportunity to meet broader diversity and workforce initiatives and creates an efficient means of integrating new talent into open positions.
On Wednesday, HASC was named the 2021 Corporate Honoree at the Los Angeles Economic Development Corporation’s (LAEDC) Eddy Award ceremony at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood. HASC accepted the award on behalf of our hospital partners and their amazing health care professionals for their tireless work and dedication through the last 20-plus months of the pandemic.
If close to 21,000 Kaiser Permanente nurses and other health professionals strike as promised on Monday the fallout will be far-reaching. By some measures, it would be the nation’s largest strike this year.
The coronavirus pandemic has placed extraordinary demands on hospital and health system leaders. Fear and uncertainty among employees have resulted in many leaving due to burnout and fatigue. While organizations work to respond to this workforce crisis, leadership development must be a top priority.

That’s the theme for this year’s National Respiratory Care Week (Oct. 24-30), which runs through Saturday. More than any other time in our history, respiratory care professionals are receiving well-deserved gratitude for helping thousands of patients through this pandemic.
HASC members are invited to attend the 26th Annual Eddy Awards® administered by the Los Angeles Economic Development Corporation, or LAEDC.
HASC will be honored in the Corporate Honoree category at an event running from 5:30 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 10 at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood. HASC President/CEO George W. Greene is scheduled to accept the award.
Past honorees include Cedars-Sinai, Honda, Kaiser Permanente, Los Angeles World Airports, Caltech and SpaceX.
