HASC’s Endorsed Business Partner program is pleased to share some great news this month. Through an ongoing partnership with class action recovery service provider MCAG, the association will be soon distributing more than $224,000 to member hospitals.
HASC’s partnership with MCAG helps ensure that member hospitals receive their fair share of applicable class action settlements.
Cherished Futures for Black Moms & Babies last month received a key $300,000 grant from Health Net via The Centene Foundation for Quality Healthcare. The funds empower the HASC / Communities Lifting Communities initiative to move its health equity work forward across the Los Angeles area.
This past year has been historic for many reasons, not least for HASC’s first virtual Annual Meeting over April 29 and 30. In previous years, the Annual Meeting served as a venue for hospital leaders to convene with colleagues about industry trends, innovation, and important discussions about the future of health care. Last Thursday and Friday was no different — aside from the fact that we attended from our own homes and offices.
May 9-15, 2021 is National Hospital Week. Over the past year, California hospitals successfully coped with the biggest challenge in generations. The time is ripe for recognizing them and their heroic teams.

WOODLAND HILLS, CA (April 21, 2021) – Improving patient experiences for Black moms in Los Angeles County can drive lower Black infant mortality rates in the county. To help address this health equity issue, Health Net, through the Centene Foundation for Quality Healthcare, has awarded a $300,000 grant to Cherished Futures for Black Moms and Babies (Cherished Futures).
Los Angeles County Emergency Medical Services Director Cathy Chidester has seen a lot during the 14 years she has spent at the county agency’s helm. But this winter’s COVID-19 surge topped the list.

HASC is actively addressing the Clinical Laboratory Scientist shortage across the region and has released its 2020 Clinical Lab Scientist (CLS) Program Summary Report.
Working with California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH), HASC seeks to fill hospitals’ critical workforce needs for Clinical Lab Scientists — known as CLS for short.

Cherished Futures for Black Moms & Babies on Wednesday held the latest in an ongoing series of conversations about maternal health in the African-American community. The session coincided with Black Maternal Health Week — the nationwide awareness week created to educate on the toll racism, implicit bias and other factors take on the wellbeing of Black moms, children and birthing people.
The pandemic has increased levels of anxiety, depression, and substance use disorders — elevating the need for early interventions and equitable mental health care.
About 25 percent of people experience mental health or behavioral health challenges, but only 43 percent of them receive treatment. Too many people aren’t getting the care they need, which is especially true for BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) communities.
LOS ANGELES, April 14, 2021—Today, Cherished Futures for Black Moms & Babies — a collaborative effort to reduce Black infant deaths and improve patient experiences and safety for Black mothers and birthing people — hosted a unique virtual discussion marking the second year of its work with hospitals, public health, payers, and Black community leaders. The convening coincided with the fourth annual Black Maternal Health Week, a nationwide awareness week to deepen the conversation about Black maternal health in the U.S.

The online offering focuses on the role of the nurse leader in creating a collaborative, open and safety-first atmosphere. The course also supports nurse involvement with customer service, continuous survey readiness (CSR) and response to critical events.
April is National Minority Health Month, a time to raise awareness about health disparities that continue to impact racial and ethnic minority populations. While HASC through Communities Lifting Communities and National Health Foundation is focusing its attention on these important issues year-round as one of our top strategic priorities, it is a timely opportunity to provide a collective voice to support eliminating health care disparities while improving health outcomes of all minority populations.
