As COVID-19 cases continue to trend downward — 24 percent in the six-county HASC region over the last two weeks — we’re reminded that vaccines offer a proven pathway to continue this trend. While densely-populated Southern California communities with higher vaccination rates experienced fewer deaths per capita, the state’s rural regions were hit hard.
Southern California Edison is now offering a Public Safety Partner Portal that delivers detailed Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) information not available to the general public at SCE.com.

Ensuring optimal patient access is always a challenge for hospitals and hospital staff. Securing prior authorization for procedures takes a lot of staff time. Often, these procedures get denied or delayed while staff determines coverage. Many times, procedures are referred and then determined to be out-of-network, requiring more out-of-pocket expenses for patients who usually cannot afford the costs. Hospitals either “lose” the procedures when the patient isn’t covered, or they must set up a long-term payment plan with the patient that goes into bad debt.
As hospitals and health systems continue to grapple with pandemic-related staffing shortages, HASC reminds members to take advantage of a solution called Medefis offered by AMN Healthcare, a HASC Endorsed Business Partner.
Medefis provides a vendor management service and technology portal to connect health care facilities with a network of regional and national staffing agencies to supply additional nursing professionals.
Critical thinking is central to effective task management and decision making in high-risk situations. The class reviews how active assessment and analysis of information can help improve quality of thinking and discusses the key principles and barriers to thinking critically. The course also covers the application of critical thinking through nursing processes to help staff arrive at appropriate decisions and conclusions.
We’ve seen a 26 percent decline in hospitalized COVID-19 patients across the HASC region in the last 14 days, but the ongoing workforce shortage still limits relief for our weary caregivers.
HASC has received a top regional honor as part of the 26th Annual Eddy Awards® administered by the Los Angeles Economic Development Corporation, or LAEDC.
HASC will be honored in the Corporate Honoree category at an event running from 5:30 – 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 10 at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood. HASC President/CEO George W. Greene is scheduled to attend.

HASC members have full access to the class action settlement recovery service provided by Managed Care Advisory Group, or MCAG. MCAG represents over 1,400 hospitals and has recovered more than $200 million on behalf of health care organizations from previous settlements.
While MCAG is monitoring several class action settlements, the following are significant opportunities with two claim filing deadlines that are approaching fast:
HASC’s workforce initiative partner, Azusa Pacific University, or APU, is offering a perioperative RN specialty course this fall. The APU RN Specialty course is available for any hospital in the region to prepare RNs transferring to a new position in perioperative nursing at their facility.
HASC this week welcomes Well-Advised as its newest Endorsed Business Partner. Well-Advised offers free, unbiased and confidential Medicare information and resources to the patients HASC members care for.
The enrollment-assistance service reviews all plan options from all insurance providers and matches Medicare-eligible individuals with the best plan option for each person, based on their individual clinical need, preferred physician and hospital, and budget.

The HASC region saw a 12 percent decline in COVID-19 hospitalizations over the last seven days. That’s very good news. Our recent data signal a sense of cautious optimism.
It’s not the same in every region of the state, however, with areas like the San Joaquin Valley seeing available beds dwindle. The region’s open adult ICU beds dropped below 10 percent for more than three consecutive days, making it the first California region to enact surge protocols.

Megan Barajas is HASC’s newest regional vice president — covering Riverside and San Bernardino counties. The latter, trivia buffs know, is the largest county in the contiguous United States, almost the size of West Virginia.
HASC continues to partner with Southern California Edison to communicate the latest to hospitals on electrical power delivery and how facilities can avoid service interruption due to wind, wildfire and excessive demand due to heat events.
