The Public Health Alliance of Southern California, a partner in HASC’s Communities Lifting Communities community health initiative, issued a call this week for support of the region’s public health officers and officials — many who are enduring verbal attacks by opponents of face mask and social distancing mandates.
This week, HASC’s Strategic Communications team is sharing Preventative Measures: COVID-19, a toolkit designed to make member messaging on COVID-19 prevention simple and effective.
HASC this week welcomes Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Murrieta as its newest member.
The HASC Board of Directors confirmed Encompass’s membership on June 11.
The facility is a new hospital that opened in February 2020 in the Riverside County community as part of the Encompass Health system. Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Murrieta is an investor-owned hospital and primarily an inpatient rehabilitation facility with 50 beds.
HASC and its Communities Lifting Communities initiative with the Public Health Alliance of Southern California today released a landmark report outlining how multi-sector partnerships with public health, hospitals and health systems, community development and other sectors can marshal resources to significantly improve the health of neighborhoods and communities.
Multiple HASC members have related challenges procuring personal protective equipment, or PPE, in recent months. In response, the association worked with Gene Seroka, executive director of the Port of Los Angeles, who Mayor Eric Garcetti appointed chief city logistics officer in response to the pandemic. Seroka established Logistics Victory LA (LoVLA), a resource funded by FEMA to procure and distribute PPE to hospitals in need of it for frontline medical workers.
Vice President, Membership and Education Services Pat Wall, whose HASC tenure spans three association CEOs and six U.S. Presidents, retired this week on June 11.
In partnership with the City of Los Angeles, Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority, Los Angeles County Department of Health Services, and a local hotel, National Health Foundation (NHF) is now operating a temporary housing program through Project Roomkey – a statewide initiative that provides temporary housing support to individuals experiencing homelessness to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

A no-cost webinar scheduled for 11 a.m. on Tuesday, June 9 will share 340B insights for you to better understand your uninsured patients and considerations you may consider when implementing a 340B Discount Card (CASH) that can provide access to 340B pricing for some of your uninsured patients.
Inland Empire Health Plan (IEHP) and L.A. Care Health Plan, two of California’s largest publicly-operated Medi-Cal managed health plans, recently announced efforts to provide financial support to hospitals and health systems during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti this week joined HASC President/CEO George W. Greene and other leaders to say thank you and job well done to nurses battling COVID-19 across the region.
In a video posted here, Garcetti, Greene and six others send messages of support and praise to the region’s nurses. HASC and the mayor’s office produced the video in observance of National Nurses Week — which runs through May 12.

An exciting communications campaign created by our partners at the California Hospital Association and the Our Health California digital community spotlights the positive work of hospitals to support the area’s homeless population. A new campaign, called Homeless Guardians, shares stories that underline the moving and very critical work hospitals do for our society’s most vulnerable. It’s a four-part photo essay with accompanying writeups featuring real people from Los Angeles, San Francisco, Sacramento and San Diego.
Telehealth has come into its own during the COVID-19 pandemic, as increased demand and satisfaction have led to broader adoption across the industry. Studies show that nearly 25 percent of American adults have used telehealth, and that figure is climbing.
It’s time for many ReddiNet hospitals to upgrade to the new Hughes JUPITER™ satellite communication system, including those in Alameda, Contra Costa, Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino and Ventura counties. ReddiNet customers should complete the upgrade as soon as possible to avoid service delays later this year.
HASC is working to coordinate targeted donations via the Greater Los Angeles Hospital Registry (GLA Hospital Registry), a free online service created to streamline donations to Los Angeles County’s medical centers and hospitals. The GLA Hospital Registry ensures that frontline health care workers at L.A. County hospitals receive exactly what they need during ongoing crisis-response efforts — quickly and efficiently.
Jared Giles is CEO at Southwest Healthcare System (SWHS). The position oversees operations at Rancho Springs Medical Center and Inland Valley Medical Center.
Giles joined SWHS in 2012 as chief operating officer at Rancho Springs and was promoted to oversee operations at both Rancho Springs and Inland Valley in 2014. He previously served as associate administrator at Corona Regional Medical Center.
HASC, in collaboration with CHA and the Regional Associations, has developed a toolkit to assist member hospitals and health systems, including their communication teams, in responding to patients’ concerns about seeking care in emergency departments during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The issue is a serious one — with multiple reports documenting heart attack, stroke and other patients postponing care and experiencing negative outcomes.
Last week, in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, organizations, advocates, and policymakers across the nation were virtually celebrating the third-annual Black Maternal Health Week (April 11–17) and deepening the conversation about black maternal health in the U.S. While progress has been made, data shows that black mothers and their babies disproportionately experience higher rates of adverse birth outcomes compared to other groups.
