HASC Briefs summarizes news and events impacting the
association’s members. Get the latest on key policy issues, legal

The association’s 2016 Annual Meeting settles at the Bacara
Resort & Spa in Santa Barbara County. Also in this issue of HASC
Briefs, an association-sponsored working group tackles the
region’s shortage of specialty-trained nurses and a new LABOR
Academy provides instruction in labor and employment issues.
The association launches a Hospital Operations Committee and

“Upstream” health care advocate Rishi Manchanda,

HASC-produced compensation reports for executive, management and
non-management positions are now available to members. In other

California hospitals — and facilities in HASC’s member area –
are embracing palliative care programs at a faster pace than
hospitals in the U.S. as a whole. Also in this issue, the cost of
cyber attacks on health care entities over the next five years
might top $300 billion, a recent report says.

HASC’s Orange County office is supporting a comprehensive effort

Cedars-Sinai Health System last week announced its purchase of

Mark Gamble is named chairperson of the L.A. Care Health Plan

Following multiple incidents, cyber security remains a hot topic
for hospitals and health care providers. Also in this edition,
hospitals in Downey and Goleta mark the construction of new
facilities.
MLK Hospital has dedicated a new facility following years of
effort. Also in this issue, L.A. County releases a jail diversion
plan and hospitals reexamine best practices following the release
of CMS numbers.
Member hospitals provided health care support as thousands of
Special Olympics athletes arrived for the organization’s World
Games last week. Also in this edition of HASC Briefs, digital
badges are slated to help human resources managers sort
applicants as the technology comes into play over the coming
months.
National Health Foundation (NHF) celebrates one year of complete
control of overall management, on-site staffing and operations of
Pathway Recuperative Care, which has served more than 500
patients from 60 participating hospitals and saved the hospitals

A statewide conference May 14-15 in Sacramento will focus on
eliminating serious patient safety events in surgical and
procedural areas. Also coming up: the end of early bird
registration for the Wellness Conference in June—sign up before
April 24 for reduced rates. May 5-6 HDMT will take place in Los
Angeles, and an important seminar on Developing, Measuring and
Documenting Employee Competence takes place May 13.
EDs throughout LA County are taking a united stand to adopt
standardized ED clinical practices for the prescribing of
high-risk opioid medications. Also this week: Patient Safety
First Collaborative announces Free Simulation Trainings, in May
and from April through June, focusing on Sepsis Simulation
Training and Post-Partum Hemorrhage Simulation Training. Register
