HASC is collaborating with Cal State University Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) and Managed Career Solutions (MCS), a workforce system partner to fill hospitals’ critical workforce needs for Clinical Lab Scientists (CLS).

Staffing firm Merritt Hawkins, which places permanent staff doctors across the U.S., has released a no-cost overview of average starting physician salaries. Salaries are averaged for doctors across the country.
Starting salaries range from $648,000 for cardiac surgeons to $399,000 for pulmonary specialists and $393,000 for hematologist/oncologists.
Seth R. Teigen, FACHE is chief executive at Mission Hospital Mission Viejo, Mission Hospital Laguna Beach and affiliated operations. All are part of Providence St. Joseph Health.
Teigen previously served as president at Franklin and St. Francis Hospitals in Milwaukee, Wisc. He was named Wisconsin Young Healthcare Executive of the Year in 2012 by the American College of Healthcare Executives.
The association this month welcomes Adam Blackstone to its vice president, external affairs & strategic communications role.
Blackstone has substantial experience in hospital communications — serving most recently as director of marketing and communications at Valley Presbyterian Hospital. He served in similar capacities at HCA Healthcare and Providence Saint John’s Health Center.
HASC endorsed partners Vituity Telepsychiatry and InSight Telepsychiatry are offering a no-cost webinar on video-delivered psychiatric evaluation and support services. The session runs from noon to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 28.
Critical thinking is central to effective task management and decision making in high-risk situations. The class reviews how active assessment and analysis of information can help improve quality of thinking and discusses the key principles and barriers to thinking critically. The course also covers the application of critical thinking through nursing processes to help staff arrive at appropriate decisions and conclusions.

Ashley Joseph serves from July 2018 to Aug. 2 as HASC’s second James D. Barber Administrative Fellow. The fellowship was created following HASC President/CEO Jim Barber’s 2016 retirement. It offers an up-and-coming health care professional with an advanced degree a chance to explore policy, media relations, program management, issue research and public speaking.
The association recently welcomed Darryl Sanford as director of member relations and association services. Sanford brings extensive leadership experience to the role — most recently as the director of marketing and business development at Las Encinas Hospital and at Pacific Grove Hospital. In a new function for the position, he’ll work closely with HASC regional vice presidents and senior executive staff in supporting local advocacy goals — along with the association’s Endorsed Business Partner program.
HASC’s Communities Lifting Communities initiative, aimed at improving community health and reducing health disparities across the region, is marking two accomplishments this week.

HASC Endorsed Business Partner MCAG today reminds members that a $113 million lithium ion batteries settlement deadline occurs this Friday, July 19. Qualified organizations that enroll with MCAG over the next few days will be eligible for cash payouts from the settlement.

The Hospital Association of Southern California (HASC) announces that Azusa Pacific University (APU) is offering two perioperative RN specialty courses in fall 2019. The APU RN specialty courses are available for any hospital in the region to prepare experienced RNs transferring to a new position in perioperative nursing at their hospital.
