HASC is delighted to announce that its 2019 Annual Meeting is approved to award face-to-face ACHE credits. This is the first time such credits are available at the spring event.
Research shows that a diverse workforce has a positive effect on patient care. As noted in a recent American Hospital Association study, “organizations that are culturally competent have improved health outcomes, increased respect and mutual understanding from patients, and increased participation from the local community.”
HASC is committed to supporting diverse leadership in health care and has partnered with Health Career Connection (HCC) to offer a College to Career Diversity Internship Program, or CDIP.

a peri-operative RN specialty course in spring
2019. The APU RN specialty training is
available for hospitals to prepare
experienced RNs transferring to a new position
in peri-operative nursing at their
facility.

Devastating wildfires hit hospitals and workers in both Northern and Southern California this past week. Los Angeles and Ventura county facilities did not experience severe damage – but two endured evacuation due to heavy smoke.

With a new year on the horizon, HASC will continue to address homelessness and its accompanying pressure on providers.
In Orange County, HASC is advocating to renew the SB 1100
intergovernmental transfer agreement for systems with at least
one DSH hospital. Over the three-year period, the agreement
will result in additional funds totaling approximately $5.2
million in new, unobligated revenue for CHOC Children’s, KPC
Health, Prime Healthcare and Tenet.

Planning continues for HASC’s 2019 Annual Meeting this May 1-3 at La Quinta Resort and Club near Palm Springs. Mental health services advocate Patrick J. Kennedy is now a confirmed speaker for Friday, May 3.
Kennedy, a former U.S. congressman, also plans to attend the event’s strolling dinner on Thursday, May 2.

Multiple employees at Adventist Health Feather River Hospital are
likely without homes after the deadly Camp Fire swept over
Northern California’s Butte County this week.

A pair of buildings at Aurora Vista del Mar Hospital succumbed to the Thomas Fire on Dec. 4. The facility offers behavioral health services to Ventura County residents.
The Thomas Fire razed two structures at Aurora Vista del Mar Hospital, cutting its capacity by 75 percent. On Tuesday, the Ventura County facility reached a long-awaited landmark — opening a refurbished building with 25 patient beds.
A unique symposium, co-organized by HASC, the Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office and the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office will discuss issues connected to homeless patients and their discharge from facilities is scheduled for Monday, Nov. 5 at The California Endowment in downtown Los Angeles.
Respect, Reliability, and Resilience is the theme of the 2018 Hospital Quality Institute Conference — taking place Oct. 28-30 in Huntington Beach. Space for the event remains and enrollment is open.
Presenters include Jim Bagian — an anesthesiologist, engineer and former NASA astronaut — with a keynote on sustaining a culture of patient safety. Also scheduled are former NASA astronaut Yvonne Cagle, MD, HASC President/CEO George W. Greene, and HQI VP Julia Slininger.

Developing, Measuring and Documenting Employee Competence takes place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 8. The intensive workshop explains The Joint Commission competency assessment standards and shows how managers can develop and redesign content for competency tools.
