Cooperative Symposium to Study
Homeless Patient Discharge Issues

October 3, 2018

A unique symposium co-organized by HASC, the Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office and the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office will discuss multiple issues connected to homeless patients and their discharge from facilities on Monday, Nov. 5. The event will take place at The California Endowment in downtown Los Angeles. 

As of Tuesday, Oct. 23, space for the symposium is no longer available. Interested parties are being placed on a wait list, however.

October Labor Issues Event
Is Now Open for Enrollment

September 27, 2018

HASC’s Health Care Labor Readiness Program for HR Professionals takes place Oct. 22 and 23 (a Monday and Tuesday) in Montebello. Seats are available and registration is now open.

As a result of the rapid changes in National Labor Relations Board rulings and procedures, it’s critical that HR and labor relations professionals understand labor law – and how unionization could impact their organization and employees.

to Nov. 14 Annual Meeting

Webinar: A Pioneering Program
in Employee Population Health

Employee Resource Connect is a system-wide program that connects staff to food, transportation, housing and behavioral health resources. Pioneered by Cottage Health, the approach seeks to “start at home” in improving the well-being of its employee population. 

The program is already bearing fruit for the health system in terms of employees who require fewer acute care services.

HASC Welcomes Tran as Controller

September 19, 2018

Kristina Tran joined HASC this summer in the position of Controller.

She is responsible for producing monthly financial statements for HASC, National Health Foundation, AllHealth (HASC’s for-profit subsidiary) and several affiliate initiatives. Tran is currently working with HASC Chief Financial Officer Scott Twomey to draft a 2019 budget, which will be forwarded to the HASC Board at its Nov. 15 meeting.

CHPAC Boost Needed to Meet 2018 Goal

The HASC region is currently at 50 percent of the association’s annual fundraising goal for the California Hospital Association Political Action Committee, or CHPAC.

“Participation in CHPAC is critical to our advocacy efforts and work to support candidates who share our values,” HASC Vice President for External Affairs and Strategic Communications Jennifer Bayer said.

Sue Andersen is President/CEO at Marian Regional Medical Center — which includes Arroyo Grande and Santa Maria campuses (in San Luis Obispo County and Santa Barbara County, respectively). She most recently served as vice president of finance and CFO for the Dignity Health Central Coast Service Area. In addition to several other health care leadership positions, Andersen previously served as an accounting instructor at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

Charge Nurse: Critical Thinking
Course Is Offered Twice This Month

Critical thinking is an essential skill for task management and decision making in high-risk situations. The course explores how information analysis can improve quality of thinking, and discusses key principles and barriers to thinking critically. Coursework will also focus on how the application of critical thinking through the nursing process can help staff arrive at appropriate decisions.

HASC’s Hollingsworth to Serve on L.A. Area Workforce Board

August 30, 2018

Following her nomination by the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce, HASC Vice President of Association and HR Services Teri Hollingsworth has accepted a two-year board term with the City of Los Angeles Workforce Development Board.

The city approved Hollingsworth’s nomination and invited her to serve last month via an official letter from Mayor Eric Garcetti. Her term runs through June 30, 2020.

Two HASC education offerings with sessions next month are now open for enrollment. 

Charge Nurse: Critical Thinking takes place from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 5 and The Mental Health Action Plan, a webinar, runs from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 13.
