Organizers wish to thank the approximately 90 vendors, sponsors,
speakers and attendees of the seventh-annual Health Care Provider
Wellness Conference — held this July 13-14 at the Wyndham Anaheim
Garden Grove.
HASC offers a class action settlement recovery service through
its partner, Managed Care Advisory Group, or MCAG. MCAG has
distributed over $300 million to thousands of customers through
this service. Currently, 88 HASC members are enrolled — and many
are expected to receive substantial settlement payments starting
in the fourth quarter of 2017.
The next settlement deadlines are fast approaching and
include a $180 million settlement connected to Optical Disk
Drive products. Additional deadlines arrive in September and
October (see below).
Please mark your calendar for Thursday, Sept. 14 to join
FutureSense and the Hospital Association of Southern California
(HASC) for a morning exploring Nursing Span of Control in
hospitals.
A celebration of life for former St. Joseph Hospital of
Orange CEO Steve Moreau is set for 10 a.m. on Saturday, July
29 at the
Masimo building, 52 Discovery in Irvine.
HASC is conducting a unique, two-part study on the road to
creating new hospital-community partnerships to address the
region’s homelessness challenges.
The effort is modeled on Haven for Hope, a homeless
transformation campus in San Antonio, Texas.
HASC members who attended April’s Board of Directors meeting in
Santa Barbara heard a vivid account of the campus from its then
project organizer Scott Ackerson.
Jenifer Nyhuis is CEO at Vista del Mar Hospital
in Ventura. She joined Aurora Behavioral Healthcare in January
2015 and has worked in various departments in three of Aurora’s
facilities throughout the country.
Patricia Rives is CEO at Community Hospital of
Huntington Park. She has over 20 years of health care management
experience and has served as chief nursing officer and chief
operating officer at HCA, Dignity and Tenet.
Rathi Ramasamy is HASC’s James D. Barber Administrative Fellow.
Her one-year term began June 26. In this role, Ramasamy will
explore diverse facets of the health care field, including
policy, advocacy, media relations, program management, issue
research and more.
National Health Foundation’s Pathway Recuperative Care facility
opened its doors on July 10 in Ventura County, joining the
organization’s two other Recuperative Care facilities in Los
Angeles and La Puente — in the San Gabriel Valley.
The dozen-bed home fills a key gap, providing a refuge for
homeless patients discharged from hospitals. Located at the
county’s downtown Salvation Army, Pathway will make a big
difference in the area for individuals experiencing homelessness,
attendees said at a June 29 soft opening.
The HASC region’s CHPAC fundraising drive recently passed its
goal for the year’s midpoint, but work remains to meet the annual
target for 2017.
CHPAC supports candidates who understand the vital role
California’s hospitals play in the state’s economy. With your
donations, CHPAC also educates and builds relationships with
policymakers who share our values in protecting health care
access for Californians.
ReddiNet, the emergency medical communications system, has
welcomed San Mateo County as its newest network member.
San Mateo joins San Francisco, Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin and
Solano counties in Northern California — strengthening emergency
response and disaster preparedness in the Bay Area.

As an informational service to members, HASC endorsed business
partner Managed Care Advisory Group (MCAG) will host a webcast
from noon to 1 p.m. on Thursday, July 20.
During the webcast, you will learn how your organization can
utilize MCAG’s service to ensure that your hospital is eligible
to receive payment from all applicable settlements.
Adam T. Schmidt, vice president, settlements division at
MCAG, will host the event.
As an educational service to HASC members, SpeedTrack presents a
no-cost webcast from noon to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, July
11.
Dr. Martin Kleinbart, Chief Strategy Officer of Citrus Valley
Health Partners and Jeremy Raimo, Senior Director of Business
Development at Tri City Medical Center are scheduled to host the
event, Achieving Effective Strategic
Planning,Improved Managed Care and
Population Forecasting Through
Guided Market Intelligence.
A standing room only crowd attended the June 16 kickoff for
Communities Lifting Communities, (CLC), the health disparities
initiative launched by HASC, HC2 Strategies, Inc. and the Public
Health Alliance of Southern California.

In months and years to come, CLC will coordinate multiple
agencies and participants working together to address health
factors that disproportionately impact low-income communities.
Kimberly Johnson is HASC’s new director of association services.
In the role, she will coordinate operations with the
association’s endorsed business partners.
Johnson previously served as business development director at San
Fernando Post Acute Hospital and at VITAS Healthcare.
Suzanne Richards, CEO at Orange County Global Medical Center and
at eight-hospital KPC Healthcare, was honored by Orange County
Business Journal with a 2017 Annual Women in Business Award last
month.

Richards was one of five women honored at the 23rd
annual event, held at the Hotel Irvine on May 2. She is the first
hospital CEO to receive the honor. Richards, along with four
other winners, was selected out of 191 nominees.
Compassion fatigue expert Françoise Mathieu is a featured speaker
at July’s Health Care Provider Wellness Conference in Garden
Grove. The Canadian psychotherapist and author joins a full slate
of wellness authorities set to share their passion for the
growing field at the event.
This month, HASC provided comment to Los Angeles County’s Measure
H work group on funding priorities from a hospital
perspective. Approved by voters in March, Measure H
authorizes a quarter-cent sales tax that will raise an estimated
$259 million to address homelessness this year.
Approved by the Board of Supervisors on June 13, funding
allocation is now set in various categories recommended
by the work group — including programs of special
interest to HASC member hospitals.
LEAD Academy is a six-day, 12-module training experience that
uses experiential learning to empower recently-hired,
newly-appointed or previously-untrained health care leaders.
LEAD Academy sessions provide a safe environment to practice
newly-learned skills and align work goals and actions to support
the broader vision of the organization. Engaging activities guide
participants through the process of understanding differing
leadership styles and overcoming the distinct challenges of being
a leader. Specific program focus areas include:
HASC and SpeedTrack invite you to participate in a free, live,
interactive demonstration of the intelligence affecting your
service area. Your team will explore information on-the-fly to
discover valuable market intelligence that affects all the
providers that serve your community. Instead of looking at
canned, static reports, you will uncover what you don’t know by
navigating through vital information for strategic planning,
managed care, business development and specialty recruiting.
CHA and HASC invite members to two Southern California events
focused on hospital reimbursement, updates to Medi-Cal and
Medicare rules and other regulations governing hospital fees and
finance.
Set for June 20 and 21, the seminars cover July 1 updates to
payment policies, quality assurance fee program updates, the
Medicaid Managed Care Final Rule, county reimbursement for mental
health patients, a look into the future of Medicare — and more.
The sessions will also consider potential future changes to the
existing federal health care framework.
