Hospital Workers Hit by Fires Need Your Support as Holidays Approach, HASC CEO Says

December 20, 2017

Multiple hospital workers have lost homes or been directly hit by Ventura County’s Thomas Fire, including a dozen at Ventura County Medical Center, reports say.

That’s in addition to more than 330 workers now without jobs due to the destruction of Aurora Vista del Mar Hospital — also due to the Thomas blaze. No comprehensive tally of workers hit by fires exists, however, and the total is likely higher.

With holidays approaching, it’s a particularly hard time to be dealing with huge loss, HASC President/CEO George W. Greene said this week.

HASC Staff View Patient Care in Action at Pomona

On Monday, Casa Colina Hospital in Pomona welcomed more than 30 HASC staffers for a facility tour and overview of hospital programs and services. HASC arranges an annual tour to give staff a chance to connect their work within the association to the hospital bedside, COO Mark Gamble said.

HASC Welcomes CEO

December 13, 2017

Robert Allen is Global Group CEO at CHA Health Systems. In the role, he’ll be responsible for the group’s health care and biotech assets — including CHA Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center and CHA Fertility Clinics in Los Angeles.

Allen has more than 25 years of executive-level experience in the field with both for-profit and non-profit entities in Southern California. As system CEO, he will lead CHA as it embarks on a $400 million-plus expansion of the Hollywood Presbyterian campus, including a new five-story patient tower and a new emergency department.

Members Get Unique BRN Program Briefing

More than a dozen chief nursing officers and other member guests attended a unique briefing on the California Board of Registered Nursing’s intervention and probation program on Dec. 1. The program provides an alternative to disciplinary action for nurses dealing with drug, alcohol and mental health issues.

The presentation took place at this month’s meeting of HASC’s Nursing Advisory Council.

On Nov. 14, chief nursing officers, directors, managers and analysts of clinical and auxiliary services gathered at Good Samaritan Hospital’s Moseley-Salvatori Conference Center to attend Developing, Measuring, and Documenting Employee Competence. Emelda Latham, RN, MS, a human resources management consultant, facilitated the HASC educational offering. Participants discussed topics key to recruitment, hiring and documenting competencies of employees in an allied health environment.

TeamSTEPPS Holds Inland Empire Session

The Inland Empire TeamSTEPPS Collaborative met Dec. 5 at the Marriott Riverside. The session included close to 40 participants representing 10 hospitals and seven centers of health care education.

Some participants experienced their first introduction to TeamSTEPPS, while others, having attended previously, described their progress in adopting the program’s team-building strategies.

HASC Puts Best Face Forward for ‘Movember’ Men’s Health Month

Fuzz and stubble grew thicker this week as staff took on HASC President/CEO George W. Greene’s challenge to sport facial hair in support of the Movember men’s health campaign.

The Movember Foundation works to raise awareness of testicular and prostate cancers, mental health, suicide and men’s health in general. Starting with 30 Australians in 2003, the effort has since drawn more than 5.5 million participants around the globe.

Close to 20 early-career professionals attended the Nov. 6 session of PathWays: Health Care Policy in Action at HASC’s Los Angeles headquarters. The meeting included addresses by Kevin Lewis and Rodney Mardirosian, co-chairs of this year’s PathWays Committee.

Participants also heard from HASC President/CEO George W. Greene, COO Mark Gamble, Human Resources VP Teri Hollingsworth and Health Care Executives of Southern California President Harry Sax. Sax presented certificates to graduates at session’s end.

Cottage Health Named Dauner Quality Award Finalist

Santa Barbara’s Cottage Health was honored as a 2017 C. Duane Dauner Quality Award finalist at this month’s Hospital Quality Institute (HQI) conference in Monterey. Cottage won kudos for Turning Up the HEAT on Harm — a multi-pronged approach to avoiding falls and other negative events.

HEAT is a Cottage designation for harm event action team.

Formerly known as the HQI Vanguard Award, the Hospital Quality Institute renamed the honor for Dauner in recognition of his three-plus decades of service to the California Hospital Association.

BRN to Attend Dec. 1 Nursing Advisory Council Meeting

November 16, 2017

The California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) is scheduled to attend HASC’s next Nursing Advisory Council Meeting on Dec. 1. Three guests, including the agency’s executive director, will address member concerns and educate the council on BRN’s intervention and probation programs.

During recent HASC member education sessions and at a meeting with the Nursing Advisory Council, concerns and knowledge gaps were identified related to these programs. The group set to attend on Dec. 1 will address these.

Save the Date: 2018 Health Care Security Training

November 16, 2017

Early in 2018, HASC will present its second International Association of Healthcare Security and Safety Certification Program. The course runs over three Saturdays, Feb. 17 and 24, and March 3, at Pomona Valley Medical Center.

Designed for health care security personnel, the program prepares hospital and health system staff to take and pass the IAHSS Basic Healthcare Security Officer Certification exam.
