CHPAC Support Network Begins
Critical 2017 Fundraising Push

At its Jan. 31 meeting, HASC’s Board reiterated the importance of achieving 100 percent participation in the association’s California Hospital Association Political Action Committee (CHPAC) fundraising goal, given the ACA’s uncertain future. CHPAC exists to support candidates who understand the vital role the state’s hospitals play as part of the health care system and the positive impact they have on the economy. With your donations, CHPAC works to elect, educate and build relationships with policymakers who care about the continued viability of California hospitals.

New Soft Skills Training for
Health Care Workforce Available

The CHA-affiliated Health Workforce Initiative (HWI) just announced the release of new soft skills training curriculum designed specifically for health care workers. Soft skills are defined as personal attributes that enable someone to interact effectively and harmoniously with other people.

Disaster Training Runs March 7-8

February 10, 2017

The next Hospital Disaster Management Training (HDMT) sessions will take place Tuesday, March 7 and Wednesday, March 8 at LAC+USC Medical Center in Los Angeles.

Additional sessions are set for May 2-3, Oct. 3-4, and Dec. 5-6. As of last week, at least a dozen spots remained for the March sessions.

Medi-Cal Managed Care Task Force To
Reconvene, Address Expected Change

January 25, 2017

Following its June 2016 launch, HASC’s Medi-Cal Managed Care Task Force completed a survey of statewide issues impacting the Medi-Cal payment model. At its Tuesday, Jan. 31 meeting, the HASC Board of Directors will summarize the group’s findings along with a plan to extend its work through the current year in light of the new administration in Washington, D.C. and anticipated changes in health care policy by Congress.

Tarek Salaway is Chief Executive at Mission Hospital, overseeing its campuses at Mission Viejo and Laguna Beach, both part of the St. Joseph Hoag Health Network. Salaway has been with Mission since 2015, and has served previously in executive leadership positions at Keck Medical Center of USC, Stanford Health Care and Providence Health & Services.

L.A. County Workshop Focuses On
Operational Resiliency, Cyber Threats

January 25, 2017

Los Angeles County Department of Health Services will present a no-cost Healthcare Continuity & Recovery workshop and tabletop exercise on Thursday, Feb. 2. The session is focused on cyber-attack preparedness.

The workshop also addresses the Hospital Preparedness Program (HPP) requirement in the 2016 Statement of Work, which requires program grant recipients to evaluate at least one business continuity planning (BCP) methodology via a stand-alone exercise or incorporated into the annual Statewide Medical and Health Exercise.

Annual Meeting Early Bird Rates Are Now Available

January 10, 2017

Early bird rates offering a substantial discount for 2017 HASC Annual Meeting registration are available through Monday, Feb. 6. The discounted rate is $795 for the three-day event. After Feb. 6, registration will be available for $895 per member attendee.

The associate member rate is $995 per attendee.

This year’s Annual Meeting unfolds April 5-7 at Bacara Resort & Spa just north of Santa Barbara.

Porter Named HASC Advocate for Inland Region

The association welcomes Michael Wall, the new president and CEO at Antelope Valley Hospital in Lancaster (Los Angeles County), a member hospital.

Wall recently served as executive director of Head and Neck Associates of Orange County in Mission Viejo. Before that he served as acting president and CEO at Providence Saint John’s Health Center and its John Wayne Cancer Institute, and as president and CEO at Northridge Hospital Medical Center from 2000–2012.

HASC Staff Tours California Hospital Medical Center

December 20, 2016

More than two dozen HASC staffers received important experiential learning by attending an urban hospital tour at California Hospital Medical Center. The Dec. 5 visit began with a welcome and orientation led by hospital President Margaret R. Peterson, PhD.

Although only two miles from the association’s offices, the hospital is a world away with its Level II trauma center and ED, which see the second-highest rate of penetrating wounds (most gunshot or knife inflicted) of facilities in Los Angeles County.
