HASC, with HC2 Strategies, Inc. and the Public Health Alliance of
Southern California, will launch Communities Lifting Communities,
a partnership intended to reduce health disparities and improve
community health across Southern California, on Friday, June 16.
The kick-off meeting takes place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the
Metro Headquarters Building opposite Union Station in downtown
Los Angeles. The meeting aims to bring together health care
leaders to align collective goals and identify key intersections
to help the initiative effect positive change.
Wellness program expert Laura Putnam is a featured speaker at
July’s Health Care Provider Wellness Conference in Anaheim.

LEAD Academy is a six-day, 12-module training experience that
uses experiential learning to empower recently-hired,
newly-appointed or previously-untrained health care leaders.
LEAD Academy sessions provide a safe environment to practice
newly-learned skills and align work goals and actions to support
the broader vision of the organization. Engaging activities guide
participants through the process of understanding differing
leadership styles and overcoming the distinct challenges of being

battle. While tapping a talent pool that’s shrinking as demand

Wednesday, May 31 is the last day to enroll for a share of a $225
million class-action settlement linked to sales of the antibiotic
Cipro from 1997 to 2005.

Managing a hospital’s staffing levels has never been more

Jessica Grossmeier, PhD, MPH, a nationally-recognized
wellness expert, is slated to speak at the upcoming Health Care
Provider Wellness Conference on Thursday, July 13 at the Wyndham
Anaheim Garden Grove in Orange County. She will summarize “the
robust evidence base” that supports wellness as a value
proposition for organizations. According to multiple studies,
wellness programs can deliver measurable return on investment by
their second year, with increasing savings in subsequent years.
Join us for a free regional roundtable on workplace violence
prevention on Monday, June 12. Professionals who work at
psychiatric hospitals and hospitals with psychiatric units that
are involved in workplace violence prevention programs are
invited to attend.
To increase accessibility for Inland Empire health care
professionals, the entire, six-day LEAD Academy program
will be presented at Riverside University Health System —
Medical Center in Moreno Valley this summer and fall.
Carolyn Caldwell is the newly-appointed CEO at Dignity Health —
St. Mary Medical Center Long Beach. She officially begins on June
1.
Caldwell has 20 years of executive hospital experience and more
than 30 years in the health care field. She most recently served
as CEO at Desert Regional Medical Center (Tenet) in Palm
Springs. Caldwell holds a master’s degree in health care
administration from Texas Woman’s University.
A total of 80 people participated in this year’s Board of
Registered Nursing and Healthcare Professionals
Intervention/Diversion Program. The five-hour seminar was offered
in the Los Angeles Area on April 10 and in the Inland Empire on
April 11.
HASC and the American Hospital Association (AHA) have joined
forces to bring our members the Health Career Center, an
online job board that connects employers to over 300 health care
association career centers across the country. By posting jobs,
employers gain immediate access to a vast network of the most
qualified candidates in the field.
Judith Maass, RN, NP, is CEO at Olive View – UCLA Medical Center.
She has more than 20 years of executive health care leadership
experience. Maass has held multiple roles, including director of
clinical process improvement and quality; service line director
for cardiac, critical care and outpatient services; chief nursing
officer; and chief operations officer.
Leadership & Charge Nurse: Creating a Culture of
Safety is a training curse that begins with a
review of key concepts taught in Charge Nursing:
Leading From the Middle, with an expanded
focus on helping charge nurses improve customer service,
Continuous Survey Readiness (CRS) and response to critical
events. The course also discusses the key roles of the charge
nurse in developing a “Just Culture” within the unit, including
hourly rounding, debriefing, simulations, and effective
communication and feedback.

The 7th Annual HASC Health Care Provider Wellness
Conference runs Thursday, July 13 and Friday, July 14 at the
Wyndham Anaheim Garden Grove hotel in Orange County. This year’s
event provides great opportunities for health care professionals
and vendors alike.
HR managers, executives and wellness specialists will learn about
the next generation of worksite programs that help keep employees
— and organizations — in good health. Wellness programs produce
documented results — in healthy, engaged employees and a stronger
bottom line.
With close to 530 attendees and 47 event sponsors, the 2017 HASC
Annual Meeting at Bacara Resort & Spa was a success in more ways
than one.

The 2018 HASC Annual Meeting is now set to take place April 11-13
next year at the Park Hyatt Aviara Resort in Carlsbad. More
information will be announced over the coming months.
Approximately 530 attendees examined homelessness, industry
impacts from the 2016 presidential election and a range of other
challenges at the 2017 HASC Annual Meeting at Bacara Resort & Spa
last week.
Many of the slide presentations from the meeting are posted to
the HASC website at www.hasc.org/annual-meeting. Topics
include value-based health care, reliability organizing,
person-centered care, behavioral health patients and EDs, and
building healthy communities.
Pacifica Hospital of the Valley and Silver Lake Medical Center
were both welcomed back as members during the March 30 meeting of
the HASC Board of Directors.
Also confirmed as an associate member is Hunn Group, LLC –
Healthcare Advisors of Laguna Niguel.
The next two-day Hospital Disaster Management Training (HDMT)
session takes place Tuesday, May 2 and Wednesday, May 3 at
LAC+USC Medical Center in Los Angeles.
Additional sessions are also scheduled for Oct. 3-4 and Dec. 5-6.
The training, presented by HASC and the Los Angeles County
Disaster Resource Center, is designed for physicians, nurses,
administrators, first receivers and other health care workers.
Coursework will cover planning for, and response to, natural
disasters and chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and
explosives (CBRNE) incidents.
MCAG and HASC would like to provide an update regarding the
status of enrolled hospitals and upcoming settlement payments.
Over 80 HASC hospitals have enrolled in the Settlement Recovery
Service since January of 2016. Depending on when your hospital
enrolled in the service, there may be up to four settlements
filed on behalf of your organization.
HASC, in conjunction with the Los Angeles Area Chamber of
Commerce, is pleased to partner with the Chapman Institute to
offer training to become a Certified Wellness Program
Coordinator, Level 1. The two-day session runs May 2-3 at the Los
Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce in downtown Los Angeles.
In a result that underlines the increasing scarcity of doctors
nationwide, a survey by physician search firm Merritt
Hawkins shows that the average wait time for a physician
appointment has increased 30 percent since 2014.
Registered nurses and other health care professionals aren’t
immune to substance use disorder or mental illness. A
day-long seminar, offered Wednesday, Sept. 26 in Montebello,
offers hospitals critical information on the Board of
Registered Nursing and Healthcare Professionals’ Intervention
Program and Diversion Program.
The program offers an alternative to disciplinary action in
addressing problems and returning professionals to work
while ensuring safety for patients and hospitals.
