Communities Lifting Communities Launches on June 16 – Members Are Invited to Attend

June 7, 2017

HASC, with HC2 Strategies, Inc. and the Public Health Alliance of Southern California, will launch Communities Lifting Communities, a partnership intended to reduce health disparities and improve community health across Southern California, on Friday, June 16.

The kick-off meeting takes place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Metro Headquarters Building opposite Union Station in downtown Los Angeles. The meeting aims to bring together health care leaders to align collective goals and identify key intersections to help the initiative effect positive change.

HASC Welcomes CEO

May 10, 2017

Carolyn Caldwell is the newly-appointed CEO at Dignity Health — St. Mary Medical Center Long Beach. She officially begins on June 1.

Caldwell has 20 years of executive hospital experience and more than 30 years in the health care field. She most recently served as CEO at Desert Regional Medical Center (Tenet) in Palm Springs.  Caldwell holds a master’s degree in health care administration from Texas Woman’s University.

Leadership & Charge Nurse Training Has Two Dates, Locations in August

Leadership & Charge Nurse: Creating a Culture of Safety is a training curse that begins with a review of key concepts taught in Charge Nursing: Leading From the Middle, with an expanded focus on helping charge nurses improve customer service, Continuous Survey Readiness (CRS) and response to critical events. The course also discusses the key roles of the charge nurse in developing a “Just Culture” within the unit, including hourly rounding, debriefing, simulations, and effective communication and feedback.

With close to 530 attendees and 47 event sponsors, the 2017 HASC Annual Meeting at Bacara Resort & Spa was a success in more ways than one.

As this selection of photos shows, it was also a lot of fun!

The 2018 HASC Annual Meeting is now set to take place April 11-13 next year at the Park Hyatt Aviara Resort in Carlsbad. More information will be announced over the coming months.

Approximately 530 attendees examined homelessness, industry impacts from the 2016 presidential election and a range of other challenges at the 2017 HASC Annual Meeting at Bacara Resort & Spa last week.

Many of the slide presentations from the meeting are posted to the HASC website at www.hasc.org/annual-meeting. Topics include value-based health care, reliability organizing, person-centered care, behavioral health patients and EDs, and building healthy communities.

Next Disaster Training Is May 2-3

April 13, 2017

The next two-day Hospital Disaster Management Training (HDMT) session takes place Tuesday, May 2 and Wednesday, May 3 at LAC+USC Medical Center in Los Angeles.

Additional sessions are also scheduled for Oct. 3-4 and Dec. 5-6.

The training, presented by HASC and the Los Angeles County Disaster Resource Center, is designed for physicians, nurses, administrators, first receivers and other health care workers. Coursework will cover planning for, and response to, natural disasters and chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and explosives (CBRNE) incidents.

MCAG Settlement Status Update

MCAG and HASC would like to provide an update regarding the status of enrolled hospitals and upcoming settlement payments. Over 80 HASC hospitals have enrolled in the Settlement Recovery Service since January of 2016. Depending on when your hospital enrolled in the service, there may be up to four settlements filed on behalf of your organization.

In a result that underlines the increasing scarcity of doctors nationwide, a survey by physician search firm Merritt Hawkins shows that the average wait time for a physician appointment has increased 30 percent since 2014.

Intervention, Diversion Program

Registered nurses and other health care professionals aren’t immune to substance use disorder or mental illness. A day-long seminar, offered Wednesday, Sept. 26 in Montebello, offers hospitals critical information on the Board of Registered Nursing and Healthcare Professionals’ Intervention Program and Diversion Program. 

The program offers an alternative to disciplinary action in addressing problems and returning professionals to work while ensuring safety for patients and hospitals.
