To Train Employees in Care Coordination

The Hospital Association of Southern California and C3 Skills Alliance – Collaborative for Care Coordination are announcing up to $200,000 in grant funding available to train incumbent nurses, social workers and other staff in care coordination. An additional $200,000 has been allocated to train new workers, from which employers in Los Angeles and Ventura counties only will be able to hire qualified applicants.

Transgender Training Supports Confident, Respectful, Patient Care

According to a study by The Williams Institute at UCLA, 1.4 million adults identify as transgender in the U.S. Of that number, 218,400 live in California. For health care providers it is critical to have staff educated on how to provide the highest-quality, appropriate care for all patients – including those who identify as transgender.

Two HASC Events Address CDPH Policies That Impact Hospitals

The California Hospital Association and HASC are focused on California Department of Public Health policies that impact hospitals. Both are busy advocating on your behalf — and the department is introducing positive changes in response.

Two important association actions address CDPH issues this week.

First, a third-annual Los Angeles CDPH Roundtable happens on Thursday, Feb. 8. More than 70 HASC member participants are scheduled to meet with about half a dozen CDPH representatives at the event.

HQI Releases Playbook to Improve HCAHPS Surveys

February 7, 2018

The Hospital Quality Institute (HQI), in collaboration with HASC and the other Regional Associations, has released the California HCAHPS Improvers Playbook to assist hospitals with increasing response rates to the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey. HQI analysis has revealed that a one percent increase in response rate is predictive of a one-half percent increase in overall mean score.

Yolo County Joins ReddiNet Network

Yolo County has joined the ReddiNet® emergency services network. With Yolo County’s enrollment, more than 67 percent of California’s population is now served by ReddiNet, the emergency communications system.

Located adjacent to Sacramento, Yolo County is home to over 200,800 residents, as well as Sutter Davis Hospital, Shriner’s Hospital for Children — Northern California, and Woodland Memorial Hospital.

Care Coordination Training Funds Available for Ventura, L.A. Counties

Deadline Approaches for Violence Prevention Compliance

February 1, 2018

Dear Health Care Executive or Manager:

A new set of Cal/OSHA regulations require all specified care facilities to implement workplace violence prevention plans by April 1. The rules require training for all employees – and must be specific to the hazards of each unit or work role.

2018 Board Installed at Jan. 20 Jonathan Club Event

Close to two dozen members of the 2018 HASC Board of Directors attended Jan. 20’s installation dinner at the Jonathan Club in downtown Los Angeles. Highlights included a welcome from HASC President/CEO George W. Greene and a passing of the gavel from 2017 Board Chair James West to 2018 Board Chair Craig Leach.

Current board members and HASC staff were joined by half a dozen former board chairs, including Richard Afable (2016), John Calderone (2014), Douglas Bagley (2013), Roger Seaver (2009, also a current board member), Tim Smith (2006) and Fred Meyer (1991).

CHA Offers Flu Season Guidance to Hospitals, Health Workers

California’s flu season continues to challenge hospitals, with at least 74 fatalities recorded for people under age 65, numbers released by the state’s public health agency show.

A total of 32 people in the age category died the week of Jan. 7-13. Numbers for Jan. 14-20 are not expected before Friday.

Flu transmission has reached its highest rate since 2009, CDC officials said on Monday.

Close to $1 Million in Settlement Checks Are Heading to HASC Members, More Due Soon

Nearly $1 million in class-action settlement funds collected by HASC endorsed business partner MCAG are being delivered to association members this month. The proceeds derive from a single court-mandated settlement — with more checks expected soon for hospitals enrolled in the service.

MCAG, or Managed Care Advisory Group, automatically signs up participating hospitals and health systems to class-action settlements for which they’re eligible.

Ventura Recuperative Care Kept Doors Open Through County’s Devastating Fires

HASC partner National Health Foundation’s (NHF) Ventura recuperative care facility remained open through last month’s Thomas Fire providing a safe refuge for a dozen people experiencing homelessness.

The facility was not directly threatened by flames, but smoke prompted staff to take safety measures such as distributing breathing masks to clients. Due to the fire’s volatile and unpredictable nature, the facility decided not to release anyone during the blaze’s height, NHF President/CEO Kelly Bruno said.

“We didn’t know where they would go,” Bruno said.

CHA Fire Fund Seeks Additional Support for Impacted Health Workers

CHA’s Hospital Workers’ Fire Relief Fund continues to accept donations to aid Southern California hospital workers impacted by December’s devastating wildfires.

 A reported dozen employees at Ventura County Medical Center lost homes, or were otherwise directly impacted by the Thomas Fire. That’s in addition to more than 330 workers made jobless by the destruction of Aurora Vista del Mar Hospital from the same blaze. Because formal, comprehensive data on workers impacted by fires does not exist, the total number of affected employees is likely higher.
