Nov. 14’s Developing, Measuring and Documenting
Employee Competence education event will help
you stay on target with The Joint Commission competency
requirements for meeting patients’ needs.
The Tuesday workshop provides in-depth explanations of The
Joint Commission competency assessment standards, detailed
examples of compliance, and opportunities for managers to develop
and redesign the content of their department competency tools.
Nearly two dozen executive assistant administrative professionals
shared experiences and compared workplace challenges at HASC’s
annual Administrative Professionals Forum last Friday.
Topics included job stress, work-life balance, workplace
communication and leadership skills. The session ended with HASC
President/CEO George W. Greene offering an overview of issues
affecting hospital operations today — and those set to affect
hospitals in the future.
More than 30 HASC associate members attended the annual Associate
Member Lunch at HASC’s downtown Los Angeles location on Oct.
17.
The program began with a welcome from George W. Greene, HASC’s
President/CEO. Greene expressed his appreciation for associate
members and their willingness to support member hospitals and the
association. He also highlighted the association’s involvement in
collaborative solutions to the issue of homelessness throughout
the association’s boundaries.
HASC hospital and health system members interested in the
Hospital Association of San Diego & Imperial Counties Annual
Meeting are welcome to attend and able to register at the member
rate of $199.

The event takes place Thursday, Nov. 16, with many attendees
staying the night prior at the event venue, Rancho Bernardo Inn.

The Los Angeles area’s Care Harbor free clinic will hold its most
comprehensive event to date this Nov. 17-19 at The Reef
exposition hall. The downtown event will provide medical, dental,
vision and preventive care to thousands of the community’s most
vulnerable — people with nowhere to turn for the health care they
need.
A total of 22 hospital security personnel attended
HASC’s IAHSS Security & Safety Certification Program last
month. Each attendee received instruction on basic level health
care security and skills. Participants then applied their
training by completing the International Association for
Healthcare Security & Safety Basic Level Certification test — 17
passed the exam.
HASC recently hosted a webinar on Whole Person
Care – Los Angeles to review the eligibility
criteria and referral process used by hospitals for individuals
who qualify for the program. (The event was
broadcast on Sept. 29.)

which takes place Friday, Oct. 20 with the
theme, Innovating and Leading.
Designed for health care executive and administrative assistants
who support the C-Suite within HASC region hospitals and systems,
the annual forum provides updates on topics and issues impacting
administrative professionals. A peer-group panel will also delve
into topics of interest.
LEAD Academy’s session No. 3 takes place Thursday, Dec. 14 in
Moreno Valley and Friday, Dec. 15 in Glendale. The two-part
session includes a look at Planning and Running
Effective Meetings and Building and
Leading Effective Teams.
Classes take place at USC Verdugo Hills Hospital in Glendale and
Riverside University Health System – Medical Center in Moreno
Valley.
Forty attendees participated in Sept. 14’s
Nursing Span of Control – A C-Suite
Discussion to explore this challenging
issue. The morning consisted of a three-hour workshop
with speakers diving deep into span of control (SOC) — the
proportion of nurse employees to each nurse manager or
supervisor. Attendees also shared success stories and brought
their SOC challenges to the table for brainstorming and planning.
Lori Morgan, MD, MBA is President/CEO at Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena. Prior to her appointment, Morgan was President at Legacy Emanuel Medical Center and The Unity Center for Behavioral Health in Portland, Ore. She is a board-certified trauma surgeon and intensivist.
HASC welcomes Proper Authorities, LLC as an associate corporate
member. Mark Mooring, MPA, CPP, CHPA is president and managing
partner. Proper Authorities provides health care security
expertise and consulting. Its list of services includes workplace
violence prevention programs, security assessments, security
management plans and comprehensive training.
Working with HASC and area hospitals, the Orange County
Behavioral Health Department has approved new policies for
managing involuntary 5150 patients in non-Lanterman-Petris-Short
Act-designated facilities.
A total of 32 people participated in September’s Board of
Registered Nursing and Healthcare Professionals
Intervention/Diversion Program overview session. The five-hour
seminar took place in San Diego but was open to attendees from
across the state.
HASC Endorsed Business Partner Atlas Lift Tech combines clinical
and operational experience to help facilities build effective and
low-cost Safe Patient Handling and Mobility (SPHM) programs to
fit their individual needs.
HASC is a proud partner of the 2017 Care Harbor Los Angeles
Clinic, an innovative, cooperative effort that will deliver
medical and dental care to thousands of the region’s underserved
and at-risk this Nov. 17-19.
Care Harbor Los Angeles Clinic is organized by Care Harbor, a
501(c)(3) charity with the same name that combines the talents
and expertise of health care professionals, event organizers, and
a network of volunteer professionals and support organizations.

Professionals. The goal is to provide relevant
