HASC recently hosted a webinar on Whole Person Care –
Los Angeles to review the eligibility criteria and
referral process used by hospitals for individuals who qualify
for the program. (The event was

A free webinar taking place noon to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 3
will review and highlight workplace violence prevention training
courses offered by new HASC Endorsed Business Partner HSS Inc.
Seth Karnes, HSS’s education and training manager, will lead the
webinar and provide an overview of three of the security firm’s
class offerings: TEAM Essentials, TEAM Advanced and TEAM
Instructor.
HSS’s training products fulfill new Cal/OSHA workplace violence
training requirements that went into effect earlier this year.
This week, HASC is switching to a new email platform to deliver
HASC Briefs to readers’ inboxes. The new system will allow HASC
to update member information more quickly, easily and accurately.
It will also provide a foundation for enhanced member services,
including enabling members to self-select their communications in
the near future.
The next issue of HASC Briefs goes out on Wednesday, Sept.

Registered nurses and other health care professionals are not
immune to substance use disorder or mental illness. A five-hour
seminar on Wednesday, Sept. 20 is designed to provide hospitals
with critical information on the Board of Registered Nursing and
Healthcare Professionals’ Intervention Program and Diversion
Program.
HASC and the Hospital Council of Northern and Central California
(Hospital Council) have exclusively endorsed HSS Inc. of Denver,
Colo. for workplace violence prevention training. The endorsement
will help member hospitals comply with California Division of
Occupational Safety & Health (Cal/OSHA) standards that went into
effect April 1.
The HASC Annual Meeting planning team has announced the speaker
lineup for this spring’s event, April 11-13 at the Park Hyatt
Aviara in Carlsbad. The event’s theme is Big
Potential—The Power of Inclusion.
Nurse and facility managers concerned about increasing workloads
for nurse supervisors will appreciate a special Thursday, Sept.
14 discussion of nursing span of control (SOC) in hospitals. The
event runs 8:30 a.m. to noon at The Innovation Lab in Newport
Beach.
HASC, with its strategic partner, Managed Care Advisory Group
(MCAG), offers a class action settlement recovery service with no
up-front cost to members. MCAG has distributed more than $300
million to thousands of customers via the service. The first
round of payments to enrolled hospitals is scheduled for the
fourth quarter of 2017 (depending on date of enrollment).
If you are one of the 100-plus member hospitals already enrolled,
you do not need to sign the attached agreement or sign up on the
website. MCAG will continue to file claims on behalf of your
organization.
HASC is pleased to launch a new series of seminars specifically
designed for administrative professionals starting
with Communication Skills for Administrative Professionals.
The goal is to provide relevant education programs that address
the issues and critical training needs of administrative
professionals. All administrative professional sessions will be
designed as interactive, action-focused programs.
Does your hospital need training on hospital surge capacity
management for natural disasters and chemical, biological,
radiological, nuclear and explosives (CBRNE) incidents? Join us
for Hospital Disaster Management Training, an in-depth, two-day
session provided by the Los Angeles County emergency services
department.
Participants will learn how to move beyond awareness and focus on
operational strategies. At the end of the course, participants
will be able to:

Thinking course from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on
Thursday, Oct. 5 in the Moseley-Salvatori Conference Center
at Good Samaritan Hospital in Los Angeles.
LEAD Academy’s session No. 3 takes place on Thursday, Nov. 16 in
Moreno Valley and Friday, Nov. 17 in Glendale. The two-part
session includes a look at Leading Others Through Change and
Managing Performance.
Classes take place at USC Verdugo Hills Hospital in Glendale and
Riverside University Health System – Medical Center in Moreno
Valley.
The Hospital Quality Institute (HQI) is pleased to share the
QuietNight™ App, a new generation mobile tool designed to measure
and reduce environmental noise in patient recovery areas.

Designed for health care safety and security officers,
September’s three-day, eight-hour course is based on
International Association of Healthcare Security and Safety, or
IAHSS, curriculum. It takes place Sept. 9, 16 and 23 at
Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena.
The course teaches basic training and skills for health care
security officers. Students will apply tools and techniques
learned to take and pass the IAHSS Basic Healthcare Security
Officer Certification exam.
The Joint Commission and the Institute for Healthcare Improvement
(IHI) emphasize that safe patient care is reinforced when
hospitals support extensive teamwork, and when staff feel safe
sharing their concerns. An upcoming advanced class for charge
nurses will focus on the role of the nurse leader in creating and
developing this atmosphere of teamwork and trust.
One of HASC’s most popular programs, LEAD Academy is an intensive
six-day, 12-module training experience that helps recently hired,
newly appointed or previously untrained health care leaders to
better understand and use their strengths. Ongoing sessions based

July 20’s Hospital Fee Program Status Report, co-hosted by the
California Hospital Association and HASC in Los Angeles, drew
close to 100 attendees eager for the latest on California’s
Medi-Cal reimbursement for hospitals.
Led by Anne McLeod, CHA’s senior vice president for health policy
and innovation, the presentation included a detailed picture from
Amber Ott, CHA’s vice president for strategic financing
initiatives.
“The bottom line is that the fee program is one the
highest-priority issues for members right now,” said George W.
Greene, HASC president and CEO.
A celebration of life for former St. Joseph Hospital of
Orange CEO Steve Moreau is set for 10 a.m. on Saturday, July
29 at the Masimo
building, 52 Discovery in Irvine.
The American Hospital Association (AHA) has
named Hospital Quality
Institute (HQI) the recipient of the 2017 Dick Davidson
Quality Milestone Award for Allied Association Leadership.
Announced on July 12, the award is given to state, regional or
metropolitan hospital associations that demonstrate leadership
and innovation in quality improvement and contribute to national
health care improvement efforts.
Mark your calendar for Thursday, Sept. 14 to join HASC and
FutureSense in exploring nursing span of control in hospitals.
