HASC Membership & Education Services Vice President Pat Wall (right) presented outgoing Security and Safety Committee Chair Darren Morgan with a commemorative plaque at the committee’s April 27 meeting.

HASC on April 27 expressed sincere thanks to outgoing Security and Safety Committee Chair Darren Morgan. Morgan is director of security for Huntington Hospital in Pasadena and served on the committee for the past seven years. He was committee chair from 2014 to last month.

The Hospital Association of Southern California (HASC), announces that two RN Specialty training courses are available at no cost for Los Angeles County hospitals to prepare experienced RNs transitioning to new roles in peri-operative nursing. HASC selected two nursing schools, Azusa Pacific University (APU) and Mount Saint Mary’s University (MSMU), which are offering peri-operative RN specialty courses in summer and fall 2018.

Recuperative Care Breaks Ground on Biggest Project Yet

On April 18, National Health Foundation — HASC’s charitable partner — broke ground on a project to create critically-needed recuperative care beds in the Pico-Union neighborhood of downtown Los Angeles.

HQI Launches Statewide TeamSTEPPS Collaborative for Member Hospitals

April 25, 2018

Improving teamwork at hospitals saves lives and reduces turnover in facilities’ workforces. This spring, Hospital Quality Institute (HQI), a HASC partner, invites facilities to participate in a TeamSTEPPS Collaborative — where California hospitals will benefit from mentored implementation and peer-to-peer learning.

A Southern California cohort will launch in May, and a Northern California cohort will launch in June.

CHPAC Support Boost Is Needed to Attain 2018 Goal

The HASC region has reached 32 percent of the association’s annual fundraising goal for the California Hospital Association Political Action Committee, or CHPAC.

“Participation in CHPAC is critical to our advocacy efforts and works to support candidates who share our values,” HASC Vice President for External Affairs and Strategic Communications Jennifer Bayer said.

HASC, Collective Medical Partner to Bring Members Cost-saving Identification and Support of Frequent ED Utilizers

HASC and Collective Medical Technologies, Inc. this week finalized a partnership that brings the firm’s EDIE collaborative care management tool to member emergency department physicians and managers.

“The EDIE system is a hospital standard in Washington State, Oregon, the Bay Area, and several other states,” said Kimberly Johnson, HASC association services director. “We are proud to help bring this technology to Southern California, and believe it will show a similar return on investment for facilities here.”

Recuperative Care Launches Biggest Project Yet, Public
Invited to Attend

After piloting Los Angeles’s first recuperative care program a decade ago, HASC partner National Health Foundation (NHF) will break ground on a new facility in the city’s Pico Union neighborhood April 18. In partnership with HomeAid Los Angeles and ETCO Homes, NHF will renovate a 100-year-old, currently-vacant sanitarium, transforming it into a healing, trauma-informed recuperative care program, and expanding its total service capacity from 52 to 100 beds. The new center is set to open this fall.

On Friday morning, UC San Francisco’s Maria Raven will share insight gained through the EDIE inter-hospital database. EDIE allows member hospitals to access data on frequent ED utilizers – including prescription records and care histories that are often hard to access across facilities.

Culturally Competent Health Care Improves Service Delivery, Bottom Line

According to the 2018 Healthcare Talent Scan by Health Career Center and the American Hospital Association, as patient populations become more diverse, providing culturally competent care is more important than ever.

As noted in a separate AHA study, “organizations that are culturally competent have improved health outcomes, increased respect and mutual understanding from patients, and increased participation from the local community.”

Implementing culturally competent care may also pay dividends on an organization’s balance sheet.
