HASC Welcomes CEO

Jill Welton is President/CEO at Dignity Health – Glendale Memorial Hospital. She has been with Dignity Health for the past six years, most recently as vice president, chief operating officer/chief nursing officer at Saint Francis Memorial Hospital in San Francisco. Welton earned her master’s in nursing from Holy Names University in Oakland, and her bachelor’s in nursing from Cal State Hayward.

Each year, a cohort selected from a pool of candidates attends four sessions — where health care leaders share insights and inspiration to propel participants toward their next career objective.

Launched in 2015, AHA’s #123forEquity Pledge to Act to Eliminate Health Care Disparities urges hospital and health system leaders to support access across socioeconomic lines by examining race, ethnicity and language preference data, advancing cultural competency training, and increasing leadership diversity. The initiative also aims to improve and strengthen community capacity.

Hospitals Against Violence Day Is Friday

June 6, 2018

Friday, June 8 is a national day of awareness for violence prevention that calls for ending violence in the community and workplace. Sponsored by the American Hospital Association with the hashtag #HAVhope, for hospitals against violence, the event focuses on an education campaign to raise awareness, with hospitals posting photos and messages supporting violence prevention to their social media accounts.

Members Urged to Submit
Letters to Oppose AB 3087

May 23, 2018

Opposing California Assembly Bill 3087, legislation that would set reimbursement rates for the state’s hospitals and other providers, is a policy priority for the California Hospital Association (CHA) and HASC. Writing in the Sacramento Bee, CHA President/CEO Carmela Coyle recently warned that, if passed, the law could result in as many as 175,000 layoffs. CHA estimates that hospitals statewide would lose $18 billion annually — the financial impact to hospitals in Los Angeles County might total $3.4 billion annually.

HASC to Sign Equity Pledge,
Members Invited to Follow

Launched in 2015, AHA’s #123forEquity Pledge to Act to Eliminate Health Care Disparities urges hospital and health system leaders to accelerate progress toward eliminating health disparities, increasing quality of care and advancing diversity and inclusion in health care.  

Hospitals are being asked to make the efforts a priority. As of last summer, just 73 of California’s more than 400 hospitals and health systems had endorsed the pledge.

Santa Barbara County Receives
$1.2-million Behavioral Health Grant

Santa Barbara County’s Department of Behavioral Wellness recently received a $1.2 million grant to support its mental health triage services. With this funding, the department aims to reduce wait times and 5150 holds — especially for youth in crisis — in county emergency departments.

California’s Mental Health Services Oversight & Accountability Commission is the grant source.

Catch-up Needed to Reach 2018 CHPAC Goal

The HASC region is currently at 37 percent of the association’s annual fundraising goal for the California Hospital Association Political Action Committee, or CHPAC.

“Participation in CHPAC is critical to our advocacy efforts and efforts to support candidates who share our values,” HASC Vice President for External Affairs and Strategic Communications Jennifer Bayer said.

Please appoint a CHPAC Campaign Coordinator for your facility today. HASC staff will provide the necessary coordination to make your campaign a success!

Lockdown Is Lifted at Santa Ana Hospital

May 15, 2018

Police searched Orange County Global Medical Center in Santa Ana this morning following a credible threat – received via the facility’s internal phone system – from a man claiming to have a gun. Around 8:15 a.m., a Code Silver and lockdown were declared. Hospital staff sheltered in place for close to three hours.

By 11:30 a.m., the lockdown was lifted. No gunman was found – and the hospital resumed normal operations.

Paul Young Named Senior
Vice President for Reimbursement

Paul Young (above) attended Honolulu’s prestigious Punahou School before earning bachelor of education and MBA degrees at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

Paul Young, recently of the Healthcare Association of Hawaii, joined HASC’s senior management team in April as senior vice president, reimbursement.

Young spent more than seven years as the Hawaii association’s manager of reimbursement before advancing to associate vice president. Before that, he spent a dozen years with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Hawaii.

HASC and Aurora Vista del Mar Partner to Restore Services as Quickly as Possible

A crew placed a modular component at Aurora Vista del Mar Hospital on April 20 to replace the administration building lost in the Thomas Fire on Dec. 4. The singed Mexican fan palms serve as a reminder of the blaze’s intensity.

On the night of Dec. 4, the Thomas Fire razed two key structures at Aurora Vista del Mar Hospital – a behavioral health facility just north of Ventura. For nearly four months, 75 percent of Ventura County’s psychiatric beds, and a large proportion of its psychiatric outpatient services, were shut down.
