The Hospital Association of Southern California announces that Azusa Pacific University (APU) is offering a peri-operative RN specialty course this fall. The APU RN Specialty training course is available for Los Angeles County hospitals to prepare experienced RNs transferring to a new position in peri-operative nursing at their hospital.

Outgoing HASC James D. Barber Administrative Fellow Rathi
Ramasamy says she will continue to focus on social
determinants of health and health equity as her career
unfolds.
Rathi Ramasamy wraps up her year as HASC’s first James D. Barber
Administrative Fellow this week. An Ohio native, she earned a
Master of Public Health degree at UCLA before embarking on her
13-month term — which she called “a springboard for career
leadership” in the health care field.
HASC has once again partnered with Toyon Associates, Inc. to
conduct the 2018 Medicare Wage Index Improvement Project (WIIP)
for the Los Angeles area. Toyon estimates that the project
has the potential to increase Medicare reimbursements by $18
million in Federal Fiscal Year 2020 by maintaining the Los
Angeles Average Hourly Wage (AHW) above the rural California wage
index (CA rural floor).
Former Riverside County Public Health Director Susan

This week, HASC welcomes a new executive director and program
manager to leadership roles in its Communities Lifting
Communities initiative aimed at closing gaps in Southern
California health care.
Respect, Reliability, and Resilience is
the theme of the 2018 Hospital Quality Institute Conference — at
the end of October in Huntington Beach.
Jim Bagian — an anesthesiologist, engineer and former NASA
astronaut — will deliver a keynote on sustaining a culture of
patient safety. Also scheduled are former NASA astronaut Yvonne
Cagle, MD, HASC President/CEO George W. Greene, and HQI VP
Julia Slininger.
Associate members attended HASC’s Associate Member
Luncheon in Sept. 2016. Associate membership gives participants
access to select educational events, informational publications
and other resources.
HASC’s 2018 Associate Member Luncheon is scheduled for Tuesday,
Aug. 28 from noon to 1:30 p.m. in the HASC board room in downtown
Los Angeles. Open to all associate members, the event is a great
way to learn about economic, legislative and regulatory trends
likely to impact the industry.
The 2019 HASC Annual Meeting runs May 1-3 at La Quinta Resort &
Club in Palm Springs. It’s not too soon for attendees and
sponsors to register — forms for both are available here.

HASC charity partner National Health Foundation seeks volunteers
for three Saturday work days in August that will assist building
contractors with the group’s Pico-Union recuperative care
project.
Following a vigorous vetting process, HASC has endorsed InSight
Telepsychiatry and Vituity Telepsychiatry as endorsed partners.
Both firms offer patient consultations via two-way video
conferencing. InSight’s and Vituity’s services also include
evaluation and support to resolve psychiatric crises — including
5150 holds and releases.
On Wednesday, Aug. 22, a free HASC webinar will
outline InSight’s and Vituity’s service offerings. Set for
noon, the session is titled Telepsychiatry Services:

In September, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS)
revised Worksheet S-10, which is used to determine hospital
Medicare Disproportionate Share (DSH) Uncompensated Care (UC)
payments. The new instructions revise Medicare’s definition of
charity care and uncompensated care and will now be used to
redistribute more than $8 billion in hospital Medicare UC
payments across the nation in federal year 2019.
Santa Cruz County’s wild coast sits between Monterey Bay and
Half Moon Bay in California’s midsection.
Santa Cruz County has joined the ReddiNet® emergency
services network. With this new enrollment, nearly 70
percent of California’s population is now served by
ReddiNet, the emergency communications system.
Located 70 miles south of San Francisco, Santa Cruz County is
home to 260,000 residents — as well as Dominican Hospital,
Watsonville Community Hospital and Sutter Maternity & Surgery
Center of Santa Cruz.

Due to demand, LEAD Academy’s autumn 2018 series is now full and
closed to enrollment, however, the spring 2019 sessions are open
and available. Sessions take

Working with the American Hospital Association,
the Institute for Diversity and Health
Equity and the Disparities Solutions
Center are conducting training sessions over the next
two years to provide strategies that help hospitals and health
systems effectively achieve the goals of AHA’s
#123forEquity pledge. The first
regional session, on Wednesday, July 25, is a day-long look at
execution strategies for each component of the pledge.
The Hospital Association of Southern California and the Hospital Council of Northern and Central California this week announce their endorsement of InSight Telepsychiatry and Vituity Telepsychiatry. As endorsed business partners, each is fully qualified to help member hospitals assist psychiatric patients in the ED and other care settings.
The deadline is now extended to 5 p.m. today for
member responses to a survey on top public policy priorities for
2019 and beyond. Responses were originally due Friday,
June 15.
The survey is a key tool to chart association priorities and
allocate resources for maximum results, HASC President/CEO George
Greene explained.
The survey is brief and should take just 10-15 minutes to
complete.
